Imagine soldiers breaking into your home, killing you and your spouse, and taking your child hostage. This is not a movie scene — it’s the everyday reality of Ukrainian families. As Russia seizes new Ukrainian territories, its soldiers execute entire civilian populations — killing parents in front of their child, then taking the girl hostage and using her as a human shield. And this is happening while world leaders stand at the UN General Assembly podium discussing the plight of children in armed conflicts. A reconnaissance drone in Donbas captured Russian troops storming a civilian home, murdering the parents in front of their daughter, and dragging the girl away. You can even hear the voice of a Russian commander ordering: “Kill everyone except the children.” Her fate is still unknown. And tragically, there are thousands of such stories. Russia claims it is “saving” children of Donbas. In reality, it makes them orphans by killing their parents — then distributes them into Russian families, where they are trafficked and sometimes turned into child soldiers. At Save Ukraine, we will keep searching for this girl and rescuing others like her. Our team has already saved nearly 900 children from occupation, including more than 160 orphans — those most at risk of being lost to Russia’s system. Russian soldiers rape Ukrainian girls and force them into silence under the threat of execution. They are afraid to tell the truth because the Russian “justice system” will never take their side — instead, the girls would be accused of discrediting the Russian military. Where rapists are shielded by weapons, justice does not exist. The abuse can last for months. And the only chance to escape the Russian military rapists is to escape from occupation. Save Ukraine has rescued girls who survived rape by the occupiers. Our psychologists from Child Rescue conduct long-term rehabilitation programs. Today, these girls live in safety and are learning to trust people again. ❗The girls rescued by Save Ukraine have been through horrific experiences. 17-year-old Iryna lived in an occupied city that became a hub for Russian troops. Soldiers would stay there for weeks. She was raped many times. The girl had no opportunity to speak about her fears — she was threatened with execution. Of the 673 children Save Ukraine has rescued from occupied territories and Russia, half are girls. Many of them speak of sexual harassment. These crimes often remain unknown. Even in peacetime, only one-third of survivors report sexual violence. Under occupation, no one dares to speak — even a word of truth can be life-threatening. Sexual violence is not a separate crime. It is part of Russia’s military strategy aimed at destroying Ukrainian identity, will, and human dignity. Girls should not have to become victims. We can save them — if we’re not too late. The mobilization of Ukrainian children into the Russian army is human trafficking. This was stated by the Save Ukraine team at a meeting at the OSCE headquarters in Vienna. Russia commits a double crime against our children under international law: they are abducted and then used for military purposes. We have rescued 615 Ukrainian children who were abducted by the Russian authorities from the occupied territories and moved deep into Russia. The testimonies of these children confirm three components of child trafficking. First, it is the forced transfer of underage Ukrainians to the Russian Federation, primarily boys from the occupied territories. Secondly, the systematic actions of the Russian authorities - indoctrination and mobilization into the Russian army. Third, the goal is to exploit Ukrainian children as manpower in the war against Ukraine. Save Ukraine's approach to classifying these crimes allows law enforcement agencies and international courts to more fully assess the scale of crimes against our children and give them a proper assessment. “RUSlan” (from SVO, the Russian abbreviation for “special military operation”) and “NATOn” (from NATO) — these are the main characters of a new state-funded cartoon series now being shown in Russian schools. Commissioned by Russia’s Ministry of Education and Ministry of Defense, the project claims to promote “patriotism.” In reality, it promotes militarization. In the story, RUSlan is the “hero of the special operation,” while NATOn is portrayed as his complete opposite — a clumsy, selfish “villain.” Through such narratives, children are taught to see the world in black and white: our side is good, everyone else is an enemy. It’s a message that breeds fear, intolerance, and blind loyalty. The real goal behind these “lessons” is clear — to normalize war, to convince children that dying in the fight against the West is honorable, and to shape a generation ready to serve the Kremlin’s imperial ambitions. This cartoon is yet another cynical tool of Russian propaganda — targeted not only at children in Russia but also at those living in occupied Ukrainian territories. By controlling education, the Kremlin tries to erase Ukrainian identity and replace it with loyalty to its own narratives. At Save Ukraine, we see the consequences of this every day. More than 1.5 million Ukrainian children have been taken from occupied territories since the start of Russia’s war. We still don’t know where most of them are. Russia admits that over 700,000 Ukrainian children are now registered inside its territory. But it refuses to share any details: how many of them are unaccompanied, how many lost their parents to war, arrest, or disappearance, and how many were taken without consent. There is no transparency — only propaganda claiming these children were “saved.” This is why international pressure matters. Without access, without verified information, these children remain invisible. And invisibility is what allows this crime to continue. In this CNN interview, I explain why U.S. leadership is critical — not only to stop the abduction of Ukrainian children, but to force the truth into the open. Russia continues to abduct, militarize, and erase the identities of Ukrainian children. This is the largest state-run child-trafficking and indoctrination operation in Europe since World War II. Over 1 million Ukrainian children remain under Russian control, with no legal pathway home. Yesterday, this issue was the focus of a hearing at the Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Development of the Canadian Parliament. Canada is one of the few countries that recognizes: this is not just a humanitarian crisis — it’s a growing security threat to the global order. I had the opportunity to represent Save Ukraine at the hearing and speak on behalf of the children we rescue. What I shared is based on direct accounts from over 1,000 children we’ve brought home — many from camps, orphanages, foster care inside Russia, or deep behind occupation lines. Here’s what we see every day: – Boys being trained in military-style camps to assemble rifles, dig trenches, and prepare to fight NATO countries; – Girls pressured into early motherhood to “replace” battlefield losses; – Ukrainian mothers coerced into accepting Russian citizenship to avoid separation from their newborns; – Children forced into a system designed to rewrite their identity and block evacuation. 🙏 We’re deeply grateful to Canada for its leadership in the Bring Kids Back UA initiative. The Russian occupier — a man who just yesterday worked as a janitor — joined the army for money. Today, he’s leaving a war zone with a 14-year-old Ukrainian girl from Soledar, Donetsk region. He calls her “my darling.” Her name is Yevheniia. And she *has* parents. But life under Russian occupation has pushed families to such desperation that her parents were willing to hand her over to a foreign soldier — hoping, at least, she would survive. This soldier is sending a signal to others: “It’s okay to take a teenage girl.” Just as thousands of Russians already have. This is why we must bring our children back from the occupied territories. Ukrainian children are taken thousands of kilometers from home and paraded in military uniforms as a showcase project for Putin. This is what happened to Oleksandra from Makiivka. She was sent to Vladivostok and turned into a “cadet” of the militarized youth movement Voín (“Warrior”). Such programs are not isolated. They operate across occupied territories: 🔹Children are taught to operate drones through video games. 🔹Soldiers enter classrooms to glorify their “combat achievements.” 🔹Teenagers are forced into military training tracks. According to UK intelligence, since 2022 nearly 50,000 Ukrainian children have been drawn into these indoctrination schemes in Russia. This is not education. “To this day, we don’t know where our parents are.” Two brothers from southern Ukraine—Denys and Marko saw Russian forces storm their home, put a bag over their mother’s head, and take her away. The next day, armed officers planted ammunition, forced their father to record a false “confession,” and disappeared him too. When the boys went to ask where their parents were, rifles were pointed at them. They were told to inform on “pro-Ukrainian” neighbors—or be sent to a Russian orphanage and, later, to the army. “I supported Ukraine. They wanted to beat me,” says Oleh, recalling the Russian school where he was bullied every day for loving his homeland. He’s 9. Three years ago, he ended up under occupation. And like thousands of other children, he became a hostage of propaganda. ⠀ Before the war, Oleh lived in eastern Ukraine with his big family. But on February 24, 2022, everything changed. “It was terrifying. Helicopters flew so low, we thought they’d blow the roof off,” recalls his mother Tetiana. ⠀ Later, the family — like many others — was offered a place in a “recovery camp” in Russia. The promised 20 days turned into three months of forced deportation. ⠀ His parents couldn’t wait any longer to get their son back. Taking a huge risk, they drove into Russia in a car with Ukrainian license plates to pick him up themselves. But there was no way back. ⠀ The family had to stay in Russia and enroll Oleh in a local school. But instead of safety, the boy faced bullying and abuse — from classmates and teachers — just because he was Ukrainian. He was forced to sing the Russian anthem, hold portraits of Russian soldiers, and constantly hear that Ukraine was weak. “They told me I was worthless. That Ukraine was bad. But I still believed in it,” Oleh says. ⠀ Their home in Ukraine was destroyed by shelling. But the desire to return home was stronger than fear. Thanks to volunteers, the family managed to escape the enemy state. Now they are safe, and Oleh can finally speak Ukrainian without fear. He smiles and says, “It’s better here.
