Over the past month Russia destroyed dozens of locomotives and complicates logistics. They don’t even care about high-ranking Western politicians being nearby, nor proximity to the border. The attack was basically at the train station right on the Polish-Ukrainian border. A Russian drone hit and destroyed a locomotive while a nearby train carried Boris Johnson, Chancellor Merz’s foreign and security policy adviser Sautter, several members of the German parliament, and more security advisers from the UK, France and Italy travelling back from an event in Kiev. The key thing about trains in Ukraine is that they use the “Russian Gauge” track and the supply of locomotives is hence limited. The users of it are mostly former Soviet states and Finland. If they keep destroying these locomotives we’ll see countries like Moldova, the Baltics and Finland donating their locomotives until they run out. Especially without air defence this process would be quick and would essentially leave these countries without a functioning rail system too. Would be interesting to see Eastern Europe and Finland give away all their locomotives to support Ukraine to then wind up train-less, like we have it now with air-defense and artillery shells.
