Kasparov: The Baltic states, Finland, and Poland are preparing for war with Russia. Finland can shelter most of its population, Estonia is building drone defenses, and Poland is preparing a shift to wartime. Europe expects Ukraine to hold the line until it is ready. 1/

Kasparov: If Ukraine fought the way Putin does, Moscow would be covered in corpses. Ukraine does not target civilians because it is a state fighting by civilized rules. Russia deliberately attacks Ukrainian cities and kills civilians; that contrast defines this war. 1/

Former Ukrainian FM Kuleba: I do not believe Ukraine’s crisis is only about Fedorov’s conflict with Syrskyi or corruption networks in the Defense Ministry. You do not fall from peak trust and power to a complete rupture with Zelenskyy in six months for those reasons alone. 1/

Fedorov: Zelenskyy said he wouldn’t replace Syrskyi, I accepted that. I would have learned to work with him because we answer to the Ukrainian people. But our initiatives were blocked. Syrskyi avoided discussing problems, and chose intrigue and media blame. He issued an ultimatum. He found a way to divide the country instead of defeating Russia. 1/

Applebaum: Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022 partly as a direct challenge to NATO and the United States. Moscow wanted to prove there was no Western alliance, that Ukraine was not a real country, and that Europe and America would not come to its defense. 1/

Macron: Trump arrived thinking Ukraine would lose and wanted a quick deal. At the Anchorage summit, he nearly handed over territory Ukraine still controls on the ground. Then three things fundamentally changed his calculus and the shift has been decisive for the war. 1/

Applebaum: The war with Iran was clearly a war of choice. Israel had proposed this kind of action to previous US presidents, and they declined. They understood the immediate danger to international shipping and especially to the oil and gas industries. 1/

Applebaum: Putin's war has finally reached Moscow. Muscovites have lost cell service, struggled to use ATMs and come under drone attacks. They understand Russia isn't winning. Putin won't fall tomorrow, but it has shifted the mood of Russia's business and political elite. 1/

Applebaum: Ukraine does not need a D-Day landing in Crimea. It needs to make the peninsula unviable: make the settlers who moved there after 2014 question their choice, go home, and undermine Putin’s claim that Crimea is permanently part of Russia. 1/

Applebaum: What binds Russia, China, Iran and North Korea is not religion or ideology. China is communist, Russia nationalist, Iran theocratic. What binds them is fear of liberal language: rights, rule of law, separation of powers and independent courts. 1/

A Russian soldier pretended to surrender, got down on his knees, and prayed. And as soon as he was given the chance, he grabbed his rifle and ran off. “That Russian turned out to be a disgusting man. I wouldn't even call him a man” — Ukrainian drone pilot for Radio Svoboda. 1/

Peskov: London urged Zelenskyy not to sign the draft agreement. Kyiv said Ukraine would not sign with a gun to its head. As a goodwill step before signing, Putin ordered troops to withdraw from the Kyiv region. [Russia failed to capture Kyiv. Ukraine pushed its troops out.] 1/

Putin insists there's no fuel crisis. Then spends the whole meeting ordering everyone to fix it. Putin: Make the oil companies share fuel with independent stations, not just their own. Get small business producing fuel. Make sure everything functions normally.

Ex-CIA officer Wiswesser: Russians are willing to take incalculable suffering. During WWII, Soviet troops repeatedly failed to cross a minefield. Then they walked into it arm in arm. Some were blown up. The rest kept walking, clearing the minefield with their own bodies. 1/
