When 94% of Eritrean and 99% of Sudanese asylum seekers are ultimately granted refugee status, the government should establish safe and legal routes for these countries, or at the very least, fast-track their asylum applications. Student refugee visas and community-support/business-support schemes cannot be the only safe routes for refugees. We should not be offering asylum protection based on qualifications, but on the level of need for sanctuary. A person fleeing war is not more deserving of safety because they can “contribute” more.

Israeli ministers have just announced plans for new illegal settlements - three in Gaza and dozens more across the occupied West Bank. This is beyond reprehensible, and the international community must finally confront Israel with the full weight of international law. At a minimum, our government must ban trade with illegal settlements. Beyond that, we need real economic sanctions, as those imposed so far have changed nothing. From my speech last week:

Yesterday, I questioned the Chair of the EHRC about the new Code of Practice, and the harm it poses to trans people and others who do not conform to gender stereotypes. The Code suggests employees of a business or a service should enforce restrictions based on evidence such as “the individual’s physique or physical appearance, behaviour or concerns raised by other service users.” When asked to specify what these would be, the Chair couldn't answer and instead spoke about “common sense”. The truth is that people would be relying on gender stereotypes, which are harmful not only for trans people but for others as well.

Organisations focused on ending violence against women and girls are concerned that the government’s VAWG strategy will fall short due to insufficient funding. I asked the Minister for Women and Equalities how the government will ensure that the funding matches the strategy’s aims.

131 MPs have now signed my motion to stand up for trans people and stop the EHRC's Draft Code of Practice coming into force. For it to succeed, the motion needs to be debated and voted on, so I asked the government if it will allocate time. Unfortunately the Leader of the House did not make that commitment. We will continue to press for a debate and a vote. Please encourage your MP to sign EDM 240.

A year on from the Supreme Court ruling, trans people have faced a wave of exclusions at work, in sports clubs and in everyday public life. Gender-critical activists have also been emboldened to drag inclusive organisations through the courts. The government must scrap the EHRC’s guidance and legislate that all single-sex spaces are trans-inclusive by default. A clip from my speech in this year's LGBTQ+ History Month debate in Parliament:

Yesterday, I voted against the Immigration and Asylum Bill because it is needlessly cruel and will divert resources into an unfair, unsafe and unworkable system. Not only will the government’s proposals punish people for seeking sanctuary and lock out many refugees from obtaining settled status by charging them for the support they receive, but they will also weaken vital protections for those who have fled war, torture and persecution. We need an immigration and asylum system rooted in compassion and human rights.

Discrimination, harassment and violence will rise if trans people lose access to toilets and other spaces. Many will be driven from public life. That's what's at stake here. There's no benefit to women. Just harm to trans people and anyone who doesn’t fit gendered stereotypes.

Efforts to narrow the definition of womanhood, police people’s gender expression, and reduce people to their biology don't protect women - they harm us. Attacks on trans rights should never be done in our name. We must stand in solidarity with our trans siblings.

The government should be ashamed that its migration policies are being cheered on by Tommy Robinson and Reform. Instead of standing up to anti-migrant hate, this is laying the foundations for the far-right. I questioned the Home Secretary on how she can be proposing such obviously cruel policies.

The government’s own impact assessment warns that the EHRC’s Code of Practice exposes trans women to a “disproportionate risk of violence and sexual assault” and that women who do not conform to gender stereotypes may face “greater scrutiny”. It also doesn’t offer clarity to organisations that want to be trans-inclusive. For example, if a charity wants to hold a trans-inclusive women’s coffee morning as a service open to the public, without opening it to all. My plea to the government: withdraw the guidance and instead legislate to protect trans people’s rights, privacy and inclusion. For reference, the Minister’s response is in relation to membership organisations with rules for membership, but as the guidance stands, this would not apply to a charity service open to the public.

If you take a consistent position against war crimes - whether committed by Israel or Russia - be prepared to be spoken to like this. After the show, Camilla Tominey said she “had fun”. It seems like this is just a game for some members of the commentariat.

▪️ Lift the puberty blockers ban ▪️ Reject EHRC guidance ▪️ Legislate to ensure single-sex spaces are trans-inclusive by default. Posting this from my speech at the Trans Day of Remembrance vigil, because yet again trans women and girls are being excluded from their spaces. As Ess Dennis puts it: “Trans girls, you have always been part of girlhood. And I am at home with girlhood when you’re there with me.”

🚨 I met with residents of the Bibby Stockholm and asked them about the conditions they’re being forced to live in - conditions the Home Office won't let me see. Their testimony was harrowing. We must demand an asylum system that treats people with dignity. PART 2 👇🏽

MPs have voted down the Tory amendment forcing public bodies to use people's sex assigned at birth in their records - infringing trans people’s right to privacy. The Minister confirmed to me that the government is not intending to introduce similar legislation in future.

Trans women have used women’s toilets for decades without issue. Why are self-proclaimed “feminists” focusing on this made up problem, when there is a real problem of rising male violence in the UK? They’re not helping women - they’re driving trans people out of public life.

Many young trans people and their families are hugely concerned about the puberty blockers ban. Criticisms of the Cass review aside, this policy goes far beyond its recommendations. At #PMQs, I asked the government to meet with those affected to understand its impact.

As well as discrimination in general healthcare, years long waiting lists for gender-affirming healthcare are ruining trans people’s lives. We urgently need increased funding for gender-affirming healthcare, improved training for GPs, and to co-produce services with trans patients to ensure that they’re inclusive and fit for purpose.
