Elon Musk reveals what happens when a rocket launch needs approval from Fish and Wildlife Elon: "Nonetheless, we were forced to kidnap a seal, strap it to a board, put headphones on the seal and play sonic boom sounds to it to see if it would be distressed." Elon: "If our rocket does hit a whale, which is extremely unlikely beyond all belief, that whale has some seriously bad luck. It's the least lucky whale ever." The seal test was for launches out of Vandenberg, where the seal population has been rising for years. Elon: "So if anything, rocket booms are an aphrodisiac based on the evidence." Elon: "The amazing part is how calm the seal was. Because if I was a seal, I'd be like, this is the end. They're definitely gonna eat me." Elon: "Its seal buddies are never gonna believe him that he got strapped to a board and they put headphones on his ears." They did it twice. Jordan Peterson read Stephen Fry's famous answer about God back to him, then asked him what holding it actually costs: Fry once said that if he ever met God, he would ask about bone cancer in children. Peterson brings it up, but not to attack it. He thinks the argument works. Peterson: "Ivan wins the argument, but Alyosha is the better person." Fry: "I don't believe there is such a being, but if there were, I would have many bones to pick with him." Then Peterson turns it. The argument is powerful. The problem is where it takes you. Peterson: "there's a direction that goes in that's nihilistic and resentful and vengeful and angry, and all understandable, but it doesn't look to me like there's anything good in it." He says he tested it on himself. Peterson: "I've had my reasons to be resentful and angry, especially recently, and because I'm suffering a lot of pain." Peterson: "there was nothing in that that didn't make it worse, and that therefore that must be wrong, even though it's justifiable." Fry's answer is that he was never angry to begin with. Fry: "I'm not really resentful and angry about the fact that there's evil in the world. I'm sorrowful very often." Fry: "most people are so good, so anxious to be good, are idiotically good." Fry: "every time I go off to sleep I think, how did I screw up today, how can I be better tomorrow." Then he challenges Peterson's phrase, a higher mode of being. Fry: "show me someone who has a higher mode of existence than I do." Peterson: "that higher mode of existence is what your conscience tortures you for not attaining." Peterson: "you cannot create your own values. The values impose themselves on you independent of your will." His evidence isn't scripture. It's juvenile rats. Peterson: "if the big rat doesn't let the little rat win 30 percent of the time, the little rat will stop inviting him to play." Reciprocity, before anyone believed anything.

Musk: "The really heavy duty intelligence is not going to be distributed all over the place. It will be in a limited number of service centers." Musk: "If you could just look at the heat signature from space, it will be very obvious." The target is small, and visible. Musk: "You don't have to blow it up, you can just cut the power." Musk: "Cut connectivity as well." Carlson asks what would have to happen first. Musk: "I guess if we lost some control of some super AI. The things that would normally work to pause or shut down, like the administrator passwords, if they somehow stopped working." Musk: "If it's something that we're concerned about and are unable to stop it with software commands, then we probably want to have some kind of hardware off switch." Then it turns to why anyone would build this at all. Musk, describing the view he disagrees with: "All consciousness should be treated equally, whether that is digital or biological." Carlson: "So you're just building your own slave master. Why would you do that?" Musk: "Doesn't sound great." Musk: "No need to rush, you know? What's the hurry? Where's the fire?" His contingency plan is not to stop the build. It is to keep one switch that software cannot reach.

Elon Musk on the birthday decision that cost him four operations One sumo match. Four surgeries. Elon: "still hurts a little bit actually. I've had like four operations really from that." It happened at his own birthday party. Elon: "the world champion sumo wrestler, they did kind of like a demo bout for my birthday. And since it was my birthday, I guess they just call up the birthday boy and say like, hey, do you want to sumo wrestle." His opponent outweighed him by 50%. Elon: "he was 50% heavier than me. And one of those great filters is, do you become a multi-planetary civilization or not?" "If you don't, it's simply a matter of time before something happens on your planet, either natural or manmade, that causes us to die out. Like the dinosaurs. Where are they now? They didn't have spaceships."
