This planet also has an unusual atmosphere that scientists cannot yet explain. One of the ideas floating involves a planet interior that crystallized as it cooled, causing pure carbon crystals to float to the top, mix with helium, possibly creating sooty clouds.

Hubble and NASA Webb Telescope captured a purr-fect view of the Cat’s Head Nebula. This long thin structure, made of dark, dense dust, looks like the head of a cat, its eye a newborn star still shrouded by the dust and gas from which it formed.

In July 2022, Webb revealed a breathtaking view of a region now nicknamed the Cosmic Cliffs. This glittering landscape is part of a small piece of the vast Carina Nebula Complex — where stars are born amid clouds of gas and dust.

Neptune is glowing—and it’s not what we expected. Webb just spotted auroras stretching across Neptune’s mid-latitudes—not the poles. Why? The planet’s bizarre magnetic field and a shockingly cold upper atmosphere may hold the answer.

Webb captured an enormous display of auroras unlike anything seen on Earth. These infrared observations reveal unexpected activity in Jupiter’s atmosphere, challenging what scientists thought they knew about the planet’s magnetic field and particle interactions.

O Trappist-1, O Trappist-1, how lovely are thy planets! We know you are all eagerly awaiting Webb's look at this system of 7 Earth-sized worlds. The telescope has observed all the planets, and preliminary results (including atmospheric properties) will be out in the new year!

Hearing is believing. 👂 Sonification is a process that translates visual data into sound. Listen to Webb’s image of galaxy M74: Its large, medium and small features are represented by low, medium and high pitches, respectively, with the brightest stars heard as percussion.

This planet also has an unusual atmosphere that scientists cannot yet explain. One of the ideas floating involves a planet interior that crystallized as it cooled, causing pure carbon crystals to float to the top, mix with helium, possibly creating sooty clouds.
