Famous and absolutely majestic emperor 👑🐧 stopped by the Vernadsky base. Emperor penguins prefer the colder reaches of Antarctica, and the nearest colony is more than 300 km from our station. So every visit is a special event. “We were returning by boat after ocean work when our colleague Liza suddenly shouted: ‘A penguin, a penguin!’ At first we didn’t understand why she was so excited — we have thousands of gentoo penguins nesting here. And then we realized… :)” recalls biologist Vladyslav Khreshcheniuk. The young visitor (recognizable by the gray patches on its head) stayed only briefly, disappearing by the next morning. The last time an emperor penguin visited Galindez Island was in June 2024. Some amazing facts about emperor penguins: ▪️ Up to 120 cm tall and 50 kg in weight ▪️ Can dive to depths of around 500 m in search of food ▪️ The only penguins that breed during the Antarctic winter ▪️ Incubate their eggs on their feet instead of building pebble nests ▪️ Listed by the IUCN in 2026 as a threatened species, with melting sea ice posing a major risk to their future 🎥 Video: Yana Liesna

Sincere greetings from the 30th Ukrainian Antarctic Expedition and the First Mexican Antarctic Expedition. Our polar explorers recorded their message from the Vernadsky station, while their Mexican colleagues recorded theirs from the Noosfera research vessel 🚢, on which they were returning home. So hurry up and watch the video 👀 We join in the congratulations and wish everyone a new year of moving towards victory in their lives and working to bring it closer. Glory to Ukraine and its defenders! Happy New Year 2026!
