In college, I found polling data from the student newspaper (Vanderbilt Hustler) archive dated November 17, 1967. - 78% wanted more bombings in Vietnam - 20% supported using nuclear weapons in Vietnam - only 4% wanted decreased U.S. intervention in Vietnam n = 186 (162 students + 24 faculty members) While hawkish polling softens heading into the early 70s, the popularity of the war among young people remains interesting and under-explored. Contrary to the popular "mass youth mvmt" anti-war narrative, protests were driven by vocal minorities concentrated in a few geographies (famously, Columbia, Berkeley, University of Wisconsin, Kent State). The reality is many other campuses remained solidly pro-war late into the conflict. The obvious response to: "Why didn't Nixon wind down the war sooner?" "Containing communism remained popular, at least with the base, and including with young people late into the war." (yes, support in the base weakened incrementally for a variety of reasons, including regression in the Tet Offensive, the expansion of the conflict into Cambodia, revelations in the Pentagon Papers, perception of stalemate, and scaling up of the draft - but a core "frustrated hawk" demo remained solidly pro-war to the end).

By Vivek's logic, a Somali fraudster who arrived in Minnesota in 2020, who still doesn't speak English, can nod along to a series of abstractions— And not so different from the logic of transgenderism, one day this Muslim migrant can think his way into being an American. Like transgenderism, it depends on everyone else participating in the LARP, a LARP currently enforced by an array of social & legal penalties. But of course, at some point, fiction and reality meet. And the reality is that Americans exist as a people with a shared history of carving a beautiful civilization out of savagery and nothingness.

And while there’s truth to these claims, much less has been said about how mass enrollment of foreign students (e.g., Harvard currently ~30% international students) has fragmented campus culture and degraded American students, forcing them through an insane series of test-taking / credential-grabbing optimization games. Not enough has been written about the death of the classic American college campus culture. Scott Newman, a friend, writes about his recent time at Princeton, which echoes the experiences of many friends: “At Princeton, I regularly saw students who were well-acquainted walk past one another without so much as a greeting, each absorbed in his or her own private paper chase. Those scenes from film and television of students on college campuses whimsically throwing around frisbees and having snowball fights—I never saw that happen.” […] “While the universities themselves lie about all the risk-taking, world-changing mavericks they’re looking to nurture. Universal Basic Income (UBI), in its egalitarianism, is a fundamentally left wing and delusional policy proposal for dealing with potential workforce disruptions from AI. While narrow interventions could be appropriate, UBI, at scale, won’t satiate the human, whether pursuing higher or lower things. The dollars will be consumed. The demands for more, for nothing, will grow, and it will balloon many of today’s most acute problems. Furthermore, UBI is spiritless.
