Once again, we have seen a delayed School Teachers’ Review Body pay report seemingly leaked to the press. Teachers deserve a fair pay rise that is above inflation. It is essential to address the recruitment and retention crisis. But the government must also recognise schools cannot make efficiencies. Any pay offer made must be fully funded. “If we agree that closing schools was a necessity in this pandemic, for at least some time, but that it has had very serious consequences for young people as a result of that, then I think we should be prepared to invest to try and stop that happening in the future. We cannot live; we cannot teach in constant fear of ‘the call'.
