It’s interesting how the tolerated register of religious expression and the portrayal of religion as ancestral culture changed over time in the Soviet Union. This scene (1967) has real liturgical grandeur (more devotional gaze than ethnographic distance anyway) and it’s hard to believe that someone as intensely anti-clerical like Khrushchev would have let it survive in this form, even for such a prestige project and even when the national-patriotic setting (Borodino) would have licensee some Orthodox imagery.
