John Singer Sargent quit portrait painting at the peak of his success. Tired of painting for wealthy clients, he walked away in his 50s to travel the world and paint the landscapes he loved. Quitting gave him the freedom to do his best work.

A work of art in our collection, Degas’s original “Little Dancer Aged Fourteen,” was attacked with paint today. It was protected in a case and we are evaluating it now. We unequivocally denounce this behavior and will share information as it emerges. Message from our director:

This transformation is actually unreal 😭 Artist Jo Steel reimagined Rembrandt by literally becoming him, turning into the artist’s self-portrait through makeup, costume design, and hand-painted sets. #OpenCall

This isn’t just a painting—it’s a snapshot of love caught in the wind. Monet’s "Woman with a Parasol" (1875) shows his wife Camille and son Jean on a breezy day, a moment so alive, he painted it fast to hold on forever.

We’re sorry but last night Henriette and Christine escaped from their paintings to exchange holiday presents in the Rotunda. After an extensive search, they were found this afternoon practicing their pliés near the “Little Dancer.” Crisis averted. Happy Holidays.
