Vaisakhi is not a SIKH festival it’s rooted in Punjab’s agrarian culture, marking the beginning of spring (1st Vaisakh) and the start of wheat harvesting (Waahdi). For centuries, it was a Punjabi celebration, farmers used to initiate the harvesting with dhol beats. In 1699, Guru Gobind Singh initiated the Khalsa movement on the day of Vaisakhi, giving it a strong Sikh identity. Even after Partition, it continued as “Vaisakhi Mela” in Pakistani Punjab, until later policies under Zia, suppressed such cultural expressions. Like Lohri, Vaisakhi belongs to the land and its people. Some cultural organizations are trying to revive these festivals in Lehnda Punjab 🇵🇰. The real question is: should we revive these traditions, or is it already too late?
