What did we learn from the final day of evidence? 1. This is far more complex than bill backers (and frankly No 10) anticipated and want to admit. There are huge problems with writing a bill, and then asking the policy questions. e.g. capacity Professor Gareth Owen is a Professor of Psychological Medicine, Ethics and Law at the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology and Neuroscience at King's College

The Health Secretary KNOWS Starmer's Bill is NOT safe. People will be "compelled to take up an assisted death" because of the state of NHS and palliative care. He is an honest man but the Prime Minister has compelled his and every minister's silence. 🙏Josh Fenton-Glynn MP. Watch for the emphasis on 'workability' - not safety - at the end from the Permanent Secretary.

The government will make sure the bill is 'workable' and 'legally robust'. It will NOT guarantee it is safe. That is a 'matter of policy' and not for the govt. MPs feeling any regret yet? Did you expect 'safety' to be an after thought for govt? Thank you Tanni Grey-Thompson!

This Bill is not safe. It's Starmer's Bill and even he will not guarantee its safety, only that it will be 'workable', 'effective' and 'enforceable'.
