Karl Turner MP Your comments mirror those of the Commons Leader last Monday. Last week it rather felt like the Business Managers were utterly fed-up with this unsafe bill. My guess is that they had wind by then of Lauren's plan and she was refusing to listen.

Is Lord Brooke, sitting one seat along from the sponsor of the Bill, advocating for assisted dying as a tool of population control? An extraordinary contribution suggesting human life be actively sacrificed to prevent climate change. This bill drives utilitarian thinking!

The Government is REFUSING to say how those in desperate need will be impacted by Starmer's Bill. Observe the Minister's frustration at being asked whether "very sad and poor people are going to lose out because the government takes the money away" to deliver Starmer's Bill.

Falconer wants peers to curtail debate on Starmer's Bill and limit their concerns to just 10 issues. IF they agree to his timetable, he's offered to say what he is willing to do on those issues. He isn't offering a compromise nor proactivity - all the movement is on one side 1/

Oh good, this is the Bill our new Health Secretary backs:

Today, peers waited hours to know whether there would be genuine choice at the end of life. The Minister refused to answer questions—dismissive, rolling her eyes, sighing. She wouldn't even take questions from Labour peers like Luciana Berger. The Government is stonewalling.

Legal commentator Joshua Rozenberg on the Parliament Act Plan: "the backbench MP who takes this bill through...will be prevented from amending and clarifying it because of legislation that has never before been used in these circumstances. And that is no way to make good law" 1/

A bill drafted hastily, including criminal offences... Falconer confirms that if a stressed doctor or nurse enters a room, subconsciously bringing pressure that relatives claim caused the patient to take lethal drugs, the doctor or nurse risks prosecution and life imprisonment.

What did we learn from the final day of evidence? 1. This is far more complex than bill backers (and frankly No 10) anticipated and want to admit. There are huge problems with writing a bill, and then asking the policy questions. e.g. capacity Professor Gareth Owen is a Professor of Psychological Medicine, Ethics and Law at the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology and Neuroscience at King's College

The Health Secretary KNOWS Starmer's Bill is NOT safe. People will be "compelled to take up an assisted death" because of the state of NHS and palliative care. He is an honest man but the Prime Minister has compelled his and every minister's silence. 🙏Josh Fenton-Glynn MP. Watch for the emphasis on 'workability' - not safety - at the end from the Permanent Secretary.

Lord Stevens, former Chief Exec of NHS England, categorical that the PMB approach has been an utter failure. "The idea that we should legislate, [when so many hospices announcing cuts], when that is the context, right now seems to me utterly ridiculous".

Huge frustration today in the Lords over how slippery the Government is being. Starmer's Bill will change society and the National Health Service to a National Death Service, but the Government will not be honest about its impact to inform decisions. Here's Thérèse Coffey

Lewis Atkinson MP's 'gotcha'. Witness has none of it. 👏Prof Allan House, Emeritus Professor of Liaison Psychiatry, Uni of Leeds: "The bill just asks is this person able to make decisions. ...It doesn't cover psychological and social assessment" Why so against this?!
