P.J. Washington on why he believes the Mavericks can turn things around next year: “We get a good pick, we get Kyrie back, we get Dereck back. Start to build a really great team. So, gonna get a lot better this summer, guys will be healthy, guys will be working together, so, I think it’s gonna be really good for us to get some time off and then some time to work together, and just see how we look next year. Arkansas’ Billy Richmond III just shot 17/25 on the 3-point star drill. He’s now tied for sixth so far for the NBA Combine. The leader, Kingston Flemings, shot 19/25. This comes after he tied Darius Acuff Jr. for first in the 3/4 court sprint at 3.06 seconds and finished first in the pro lane drill at 10.23 seconds (0.23 seconds faster than second place).

Kyrie Irving on Luka Doncic and if they have spoke since the trade: “We’ve texted back and forth. I’ve let him know that regardless of how this NBA business shakes out…We’re loyal to each other’s families now. We had a lot of sacred conversations that went beyond the court, and just helping each other as men. I set my mission early on when I got traded here of just what I wanted to accomplish with him and I felt like we got that going and unfortunately it was cut short, but we’ll see each other pretty soon. Hopefully I can catch up with him during All-Star break.”

Yaxel Lendeborg hasn’t met with the Mavericks yet, but said it would be “nice” to play for them. He said Kyrie Irving was his favorite player growing up and called Cooper Flagg a “generational talent.” He thinks that he and Flagg would complement each other well. Says he’d be excited to play with Flagg and Irving.

Jason Kidd doubled down on not knowing about the Luka Doncic trade until right before it went down, and was asked if he was fine with not knowing until the end: “Ya, I’m an employee of the Mavs.” When asked if he wants any say on how the roster is constructed: I think I’ve said this before, I’m the coach. I coach the players that are here. We made a trade, and we got to push forward.” When asked if he’s one of the coaches that “wants to buy some of the groceries”: “No, I’m the one who gets the groceries, and I’ve got to figure out how to use it, and so that’s what we’re doing…I don’t wanna be the one that’s buying the groceries, just give me the groceries and I’ll figure it out.”

At the end of the day, I played 30 minutes in the NBA, year 15, in just trying to be out there as much as I possibly can. I’m not saying the end is near but like it’s such a privilege to be out there, no matter if it’s mid-November or early June. My goal this year is to be the most consistent presence in the lineup.”

I asked Klay Thompson about his heated interactions with Vince Williams Jr., Santi Aldama, and Ja Morant tonight: “It was a great time. With the tall guy, I thought just like that’s not cool. I’ve seen them do dirty stuff before. I remember in the playoffs, 2022, they broke my teammates elbow on a dirty hit…I don’t like seeing that done to a rookie. That’s not cool…Don’t be dirty. That’s not it…And Williams, I just kept that same energy, kept chirping, thought he flopped when I got tied up with him. And then with Ja, he’s a funny guy. He has a lot to say all the time, especially for a guy who rarely takes accountability, but you know, that’s for another day.”
