Russia's Defense Ministry recruited just over 8,000 drone operators for its Unmanned Systems Forces in the first half of the year, despite an annual target of 78,800. Analysts calculated that recruitment should have reached about 34,400 by then, leaving the ministry at roughly a quarter of its planned pace. Russia is increasingly deploying jet-powered drones with characteristics approaching those of cruise missiles, Ukrainian Air Force spokesperson Yurii Ihnat said. Their speed can reach 600 km/h, while Ukrainian interceptor drones reach about 300 km/h, leaving mobile fire groups and heavy machine guns largely ineffective. Mykhailo Fedorov said Zelensky offered him an adviser role, but he declined. He said Ukraine needs changes in its military leadership to win with fewer losses, calling for the replacement of Oleksandr Syrskyi and the chief of the General Staff. According to Fedorov, Zelensky said he does not plan to dismiss Syrskyi. Fedorov argued that recruitment centers report to the General Staff rather than the Defense Ministry and said mobilization problems cannot be resolved without Syrskyi’s removal. He added that Ukraine cannot match Russia’s mobilization pace and must instead prioritize drones and modern technology. Responding to protests, the president said people were right to demonstrate and added that the government has no secrets from society, only from Russia. Zelensky also said Ihor Klymenko is being considered for defense minister, though no nomination has yet been submitted to parliament. He said the next minister must address mobilization and the work of recruitment centers, including finding a more respectful approach.
