As a kid, I assumed Lew Lehr must be some incredibly famous guy that all adults knew because of how often he was spoofed in cartoons. Turns out, he was a newsreel host in the 1930s that is mainly remembered today through cartoon parodies.

I guess you're doing something right if you're getting imitated! I just happened upon a YouTube video about wild takes in animation that seems to be largely lifted from an article I wrote for Cartoon Brew... or at least it's an "unreasonable facsimile" as Bugs Bunny might say.

This is the kind of absurd gag we need more of.

Don't waste your time with terrible AI fruit videos when you can watch Mickey Rooney lead an orchestra of fruits, featuring practical effects by the great George Pal.

The 1934 Ub Iwerks cartoon HELL'S FIRE shows the residents of Hell to be Napoleon, Nero, Rasputin, Cleopatra, Simon Legree (the villain from Uncle Tom's Cabin), Bluebeard, Dr. Jekyll, and Mr. Dry (the symbol for Prohibition).

R.I.P. Arleen Sorkin, the original voice of Harley Quinn. The way Sorkin was able to combine twisted loopiness with a hint of sympathetic sadness is key to what made the character work so well.

In honor of Jane Russell's birthday, he's one of the all-time great movie bloopers that got left in the movie itself. Jane getting knocked into the pool in GENTLEMEN PREFER BLONDES (1953) was an accident, but it was so funny it was left in.

Walt Disney ran the creative side of the studio, not the business side. He would sink tons of money into whatever crazy idea he was currently obsessed with and hope it would all turn out.

This is disgusting and has nothing in common with the idiosyncratically bizarre cartoons of the 1930s. If the artists who put so much love into every frame of those old cartoons saw this sterile junk, they would be sick. Have some real cartooning instead:

Forget the live-action thing. Watch the all-time greatest telling of the Snow White story: the insane Betty Boop version from 1933. Entirely animated by one man... the great Roland Crandall.

It's heartbreaking to think of the wonderful artists who put so much obvious love and care into every frame of the old Disney cartoons. I'm glad they aren't around to see this.

I don't really see the point of this when the classic Betty Boop cartoons are already delightfully nightmarish.
