“You had other options, and I think that one of the options was not to cover it at all.” Barry Malone, an independent journalist and former executive producer at Al Jazeera, has offered a critique of Novara Media’s coverage of Prof Jason Arday. Speaking to Michael Walker on Novara Live on Monday, Malone argued that as an independent media organisation, Novara ought to have taken a more critical and anti-racist view of the story. Malone, a regular guest co-host on Novara Live, avoided discussing the Jason Arday story in public until after his death, except to criticise the level of media attention it was receiving.

Did this rant encourage Andy Burnham to crack down on vape shops? Novara Media’s Aaron Bastani visited Wigan – part of the Makerfield constituency – ahead of the 18 June byelection that enabled Burnham to become prime minister. While there, he saw the degradation of the high street that has come to define 21st-century Britain – vape shops, betting shops and street scars. "Dare I say, it's the political equivalent of low self-esteem," Bastani said. Bastani has spent months advocating for the government to "go after dodgy vape shops". This week, the prime minister announced that councils would get more powers to stop gambling and vape shops from opening. "I don't see why anywhere should have to accept they have empty shops, vape shops and the challenges that come with that," Burnham said.

"If the British government is going to be completely dominated by the bond market, MPs might as well go home." Diane Abbott told Cathy Newman on Sky News that whoever replaces Keir Starmer as prime minister must go through a "properly organised selection process", regardless of any "hissy fit" made by the bond markets. When this provoked laughter from Newman and eye rolling from former Conservative cabinet minister Gillian Keegan, Diane Abbott argued that there's no point in having a parliament if the financial sector always has the final word.

"I'm not a survivalist, but I'm certainly preparing. I mean, we're increasing the number of water butts, we're having water harvesting because that's going to be obviously a huge issue in summers to come. We're saving seed. We're not doing it yet, but we will be storing things like flour and sugar and cooking oil in relatively large quantities in the cellar because it's common sense" Aaron Bastani in conversation with natural disaster expert Bill McGuire on this week's Downstream. “Israel treated us terribly. It denied people essential medicine. One night, yesterday night, we were shouting that someone was possibly having a heart attack. They didn’t come. They didn’t care. They gave us food that was infested with insects. They subjected some people to torture.” Novara Media’s Kieran Andrieu, who joined the Global Sumud Flotilla, said he took part to stand in solidarity with Palestinians and described the harsh conditions passengers faced. “This is how Israel behaves towards Europeans. You can only imagine how it treats Palestinians every single day.”
