Anna Politkovskaya memorial plaque reinstalled for 26th time A new memorial plaque dedicated to murdered Novaya Gazeta journalist Anna Politkovskaya has been restored for the 26th time since the start of the year. After the plaque was first destroyed in January, a Moscow court fined a city resident for destroying the plaque several days later, fining the man 1,000 rubles (€11) for petty hooliganism. However, in an editorial statement, Novaya Gazeta said that a neo-Nazi group had been behind the attack, also accusing it of defacing a makeshift memorial to human rights lawyer Stanislav Markelov and Novaya Gazeta journalist Anastasia Baburova, both of whom were killed by neo-Nazis in Moscow in 2009. Politkovskaya, who gained international renown for her exposés of Kremlin corruption and the brutal treatment of civilians in Chechnya at the hands of Russian forces during the Second Chechen War, was assassinated in the stairwell of her own apartment building on Moscow’s Lesnaya Street on 7 October 2006. Those who ordered the crime have never been found. The European Court of Human Rights ruled in 2018 that the Russian government had failed to carry out an effective investigation into Politkovskaya’s murder. The statute of limitations on the case expired on 7 October 2021. 📹: RusNews

Russian soldiers ask Putin to protect their families from ‘feminist groups’ Participants at the third Russian Fathers’ Convention have filmed a video message in which they berated Russian women influenced by “feminist groups trained in the West” for divorcing their soldier husbands, turning their children against them and stealing their husbands’ property. “Our veterans are powerless to fight this well-organised system of professionals whose aim is to tear families apart,” one man in the video says. Divorce rates in Russia have reached a new peak, they tell Vladimir Putin in their message. ‘The only thing we do is wage war’ — 82-year-old survivor of Leningrad speaks out Lyudmila Vasilyeva, an 82-year-old survivor of the Nazi siege of Leningrad in World War II and a staunch critic of the war in Ukraine, was caught exchanging heated words with police officers in the centre of St. Petersburg on the tenth anniversary of Russian opposition politician Boris Nemtsov’s murder last week. Trying to appeal to the officers’ sense of justice, she stressed that Russia was occupying Ukrainian territory and future generations of Russians would have to pay reparations to Ukraine. Vasilyeva had previously held a one-woman picket on the third anniversary of the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
