MW2 (2009) vs MWII (2022) AI side by side. 2009 NPCs rely on pure speed and raw pressure. 2022 NPCs add tactical sandbox utility using smoke to break line of sight, snapshot grenades to reveal enemies, and thermite area denial. Cool seeing how NPC logic evolved over 13 years.

The MW2022 beta had AI soldiers that could revive each other mid-fight without any player input. DMZ pushed it further — AI calling in killstreaks, holding positions, coordinating under pressure. No other extraction game has come close to that level of NPC systemic behavior. If DMZ 2.0 builds on that foundation instead of stripping it back, it could be something genuinely different.

The Advanced AI in Modern Warfare II rarely gets the appreciation it deserves for its tactical depth. Instead of relying entirely on rigidly scripted events, the AI actively assesses threats, prioritizes room-clearing, and organically pushes the frontline. When two AI groups fight each other, the engine generates a completely unscripted, chaotic firefight that feels incredibly real. The squad tactics here are brilliant.

Helldivers 2 adding specialized SEAF Troopers changes squad dynamics completely. Medics prioritize wounded AI and seek out damaged Helldivers to heal, while Squad Leaders direct frontline infantry. It turns standard spawn waves into a genuinely responsive fireteam.

Marine and Elite AI actually work incredibly well together in Halo Infinite. The AI behavior trees for Marines and Elites are vastly different, yet they sync perfectly when placed on the same team. Elites push the frontline to absorb plasma damage, allowing Marines to secure flanking positions and provide suppression. You see the brilliance of a fully systemic game engine.

A single Hunter vs 50 Grunts requires the engine to manage dozens of simultaneous line-of-sight calculations. The Hunter actively tries to keep its shielded arm facing the highest concentration of incoming fire while backing the swarm into geographic choke points. The internal logic for Grunts includes specific panic triggers when facing overwhelming force. A Hunter landing a single explosive blast instantly shatters the morale of nearby units, causing their combat routines to constantly shift between attacking and fleeing.

The Halo Infinite engine has massive untapped potential for large-scale AI combat. Official Spartan AI doesn't exist in Infinite campaign, but modders made it work using Marine model/behavior swaps. Seeing a Spartan storm a Banished base with a squad of marines changes the entire feel of the game.

Something interesting happens to Marine pathing when they are forced to engage the Flood. Standard infantry logic is built around tactical shootouts. But since the parasite relies on swarming and reanimating fallen units, the Marines have to constantly recalculate their threat priority on the fly. They end up abandoning their organized defensive positions just to survive the sheer volume of enemies pushing the line.

Running an endless simulation on High Noon reveals how adaptable the old combat systems are. A community creator managed to script dynamic dropships and custom weapons into a continuous loop. Because the engagement distances are so short, you get a really clear look at how different Covenant ranks prioritize targets under heavy fire.
