Under the leadership of Hon'ble PM Narendra Modi, we will ensure that there is ‘Purvodaya se Sarvodaya’: when the East rises, its light reaches all of India. This campus stands close to the world-famous Sun Temple at Konark. In the Aditya Hridayam Stotram of Ramayana, Maharshi Agastya tells Shri Rama on the battlefield of Lanka that the Surya Bhagwan protects the worlds with his rays and nourishes all beings. In that same spirit, the ReserveBankOfIndia & its new campus will serve the nation, protecting the financial systems of India and sustaining the flow of payments that nourishes our economy. - Smt Nirmala Sitharaman in Khordha, Odisha.

In 2014, the Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi resolved that no Indian household would remain outside the banking system. - There are now over 59 crore PM Jan Dhan accounts, which have no annual charges and no minimum balance requirements. Through Jan Dhan Accounts, money is transferred directly into our people's accounts, without leakages. - Access to formal bank credit has widened. Under the Pradhan Mantri MUDRA Yojana, more than ₹43 lakh crore has been sanctioned to over 60 crore collateral-free loan accounts for micro and small entrepreneurs. Many have repaid loans and taken higher loans to further fund their businesses. And, more than 65% of beneficiaries are women. - Under PM SVANidhi, nearly 1.2 crore loans have been disbursed to street vendors, who have also repaid loans and taken bigger loans to grow. - Similarly, PM Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojana, PM Suraksha Bima Yojana (PMSBY) and Atal Pension Yojana (APY) are providing very low-cost insurance and pension benefits. - Smt Nirmala Sitharaman in Khordha, Odisha.

My husband and I started our business in 2020 with some savings, but as the business grew, our financial needs also increased, especially for systems, employees and medical stock. We applied for loans in many places, including private banks, but our loan was not approved. Then my cousin told me about Pradhan Mantri MUDRA Yojana. In 2024, we applied for a loan of ₹10 lakh from Rajasthan Grameen Bank and our loan was approved in just two days. With this support, we increased our stock, expanded our business, fulfilled our business requirements and hired five employees. PM MUDRA Yojana is not just a loan for us. It has been an important support and an opportunity for our business to grow. I would like to thank our Hon'ble PM Shri Narendra Modi, you and my bank for this Yojana, which has given small businesses and entrepreneurs an opportunity to grow. - Bhawna Rani, a PM MUDRA Yojana beneficiary from Rajasthan, during an interaction with Smt Nirmala Sitharaman

What is happening in Pakistan? 200% hike on high octane fuel, 20% hike on petrol and diesel happened overnight. Petrol now is sold at 321 PKR a litre. Smart lockdowns announced in Sindh province, so that their fuel can be conserved. Restricting movement, gatherings and public events. Schools are shut for two weeks. Government offices have moved to four day working week. Private offices told to shift 50% staff to work from home. We're not doing any of it. Still some leaders are spreading rumours that there will be lockdown. This rumour mongering should not happen. It's being done to spread fear. Markets and shopping centres are ordered to be closed by 9.30 PM in Pakistan. These are all the media reports. All universities shut down and shifted to online learning in Bangladesh as there's no electricity. Five hour rotational power cuts are happening. Implemented for domestic consumers in the city of Dhaka. Fuel station across Dhaka closed due to shortage of octane and diesel. So, the situation across the world is not good. We're managing in a way that our citizens don't face any difficulty. There's a contrast in price I want to say. In India, nothing has changed. Whereas in Pakistan, plus 20% to plus 200% price depending on petrol, diesel, high octane etc. Bangladesh has rationed stations closed, supply cut 10 to 15%. Excise duty action, we have cut Rs. 10 per litre. Neither Pakistan nor Bangladesh have responded. So, India among these neighbourhood countries is maintaining a level of stability. We're following Hon'ble PM Shri Narendra Modi Ji's guidance on the same. - Smt Nirmala Sitharaman in Rajya Sabha

2047 is the target year set for achieving Viksit Bharat. It's hardly 20 years from now. So, the speed and scale with which the reforms are happening require a lot more support. Lots more support from people who are talented and have exposure. Lots more support from people who can give ideas for us to carry it forward. And, above all, support in terms of capital, which is so required for a country to meet all its aspirations. - Smt Nirmala Sitharaman in Chicago, USA

Within the country, we are making sure that we keep the macroeconomic fundamentals sound. Fiscal discipline is something which is very close to Hon'ble PM Shri Narendra Modi's heart. He had maintained fiscal prudence even as a Chief Minister. He's been very keen on not affecting welfare spending, not affecting education and health spending, but yet being very prudent. And we've kept that line all through. - Smt Nirmala Sitharaman at the Bloomberg New Economy Forum (BNEF) in New Delhi

For many years, in the name of opposing ‘Hindi imposition’, there is a practice of not allowing the study of Hindi & Sanskrit in Tamil Nadu. It is to an extent that we cannot learn Hindi or Sanskrit even if we wish to. You have every right to develop the Tamil Language. But you don’t have the right to prevent those who are willing to learn Hindi or Sanskrit. But you don’t allow us to study Hindi or Sanskrit. - Smt Nirmala Sitharaman. (1/n)

We have set ourselves a certain target, which is to bring the borrowing down to the 50% level of GDP by 2030. Therefore, I will be working on that path. There are advanced economies whose debt is well over 200% of their GDP even now. We have given ourselves a fiscal discipline path on the fiscal deficit as well. We have fulfilled the trajectory. The last mile that had to be reached by 2025-26, we have reached. - Smt Nirmala Sitharaman in Chicago, USA (1/n)

The GST Council has taken a decision for smoother movement of goods. The Council recommended that goods can be inspected, detained or seized only by an officer of the supplier state or the destination state. No stopping or checking in between. Only the supplier state or the destination state. Further, goods can be intercepted only on the basis of specific intelligence and with authorisation from an officer of at least Joint Commissioner level. So, any random GST officer cannot stop a vehicle. This prevents arbitrary checks by GST enforcement wings that affect the movement of goods from one state to another. This would significantly improve the ease of movement of goods. - Smt Nirmala Sitharaman during the media interaction on the outcomes of 57th GST Council Meeting

Today, we have distributed a concept note on an optional scheme for businesses with a turnover of up to ₹5 crore, supplying only to consumers. So, this will entail filing only one annual return with quarterly tax payments. The detailed framework will come for a decision before the next Council meeting. - Smt Nirmala Sitharaman during the media interaction on the outcomes of 57th GST Council Meeting

'Kamba Ramayanam' is a great example of Ramayanam in Tamil, written by Kambar. It's not an exact translation of the 'Valmiki Ramayana'. A lot of Tamil thought also goes into it - the way of life on the sea coast, mountains, lifestyles - all that is infused into the Ramayana of Kamba. It was severely criticised by the Dravidian movement. A very prominent Tamil political leader wrote a very abusive version of some elements of the Ramayana, which were on Shringara Rasa. It was written in such a fashion that the Ramayana was treated as obscene. To that extent, they vilified the Ramayana. - Smt Nirmala Sitharaman at the FIHCR's Dr SL Bhyrappa Memorial Lecture in New Delhi (1/n)

India has a leadership with a strong 'Reform Mindset'. Hon'ble PM Shri Narendra Modi approaches Reform as a matter of conviction, not compulsion. The Union Government has advanced national frameworks through GST, the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code, the four Labour Codes and the Jan Vishwas Acts. The task has been to make economic activity simpler, more predictable and more productive across the country. - Smt Nirmala Sitharaman at the Kautilya Economic Conclave 2026

India, much against all the odds, is able to keep up the growth. In fact, we've been the fastest-growing in the last four or five years since COVID. So, it's a performance which is consistent with the kind of efforts that we're taking. Particular reasons for it I would think is being inclusive and making sure everyone has access to resources and access to skilling for the young and making sure that fiscal prudence is not lost in this. We are conscious that we have a responsibility with public money and therefore, have a very clear understanding that we can't be splurging money, even as we have to take care of those who are vulnerable in the economy. - Smt Nirmala Sitharaman in Bangkok, Thailand (1/n)

The gatekeeping continues. Despite having a doctorate in history and being an elected Fellow of the Royal Historical Society, with multi-volume works built on thousands of primary documents and unread private papers, there were active attempts to dismiss Dr Dr. Vikram Sampath, FRHistS as a “non-historian”, a “popular writer” & an “amateur”, because his findings did not conform. The message from these gatekeepers could hardly be clearer: whatever your doctorate, whatever your citations, without their membership card, you do not get onto the stage. - Smt Nirmala Sitharaman at the FIHCR's Dr SL Bhyrappa Memorial Lecture in New Delhi (1/n)

During the pandemic, my father passed away and our printing business was destroyed. I had no money and no bank believed that a 23-year-old girl could do anything. Some asked me to give gold, others asked for land, but I had nothing in my name. Then I went to PNB Bank in Sealdah. The manager and the bank officials helped me a lot and I was able to restart my business. Earlier, I had one computer. Now, I have two computers, a printing machine and eight people working with me. I did not have the confidence that I could do something. Today, I have that confidence. PM MUDRA Yojana saved my family. - Smt Susmita Gharai, a PM MUDRA Yojana beneficiary from West Bengal, during an interaction with Smt Nirmala Sitharaman

Allow me a personal reflection on how Dr Bhyrappa first entered my consciousness. Decades ago, I watched 'Vamshavruksha' performed as a play in Tiruchirappalli, Tamil Nadu. Sitting in the audience, watching those characters wrestle with tradition and duty, the tension of that performance stayed with me. I bring this up because the stage is not merely a setting in my memory; it is the central metaphor of what I wish to place before you today. - Smt Nirmala Sitharaman in New Delhi (1/n)

I want to convey a message to the Income Tax Department. You're not just tax collectors. You're the face of the government's relationship with the taxpayer. Since you're the face of the government's relationship with the taxpayer, this new law gives you a clearer and leaner framework to make it simple, to make it simpler for people who want to understand it better. It must be administered with empathy, fairness and efficiency. I expect every officer to internalise the spirit of this new law. The taxpayer is not your adversary. The taxpayer is your partner in nation building. - Smt Nirmala Sitharaman in New Delhi (1/2)

I may speak in Hindi, I may speak in English, I may speak in Telugu or I may speak in Tamil. How does it matter to the Hon'ble MP? Because now, with the arrangements made by the Hon’ble Speaker, he can get the translation in any language that he desires. So what is this argument that “she spoke in Hindi, therefore I can’t understand?" The facilities are available. Technology has been used. He can understand in any language he wants. But because he has not read the Bill thoroughly and because he wants to divert from the topic, he is bringing all these things and I take objection to it. - Smt Nirmala Sitharaman in Lok Sabha.

In 2014, Hon'ble PM Shri Narendra Modi opened the doors of banking to everyone through PM Jan Dhan accounts, without requiring a minimum balance. In 2015, PM MUDRA Yojana enabled small entrepreneurs to access loans without collateral. By repaying their loans on time, beneficiaries have been able to access higher amounts, strengthen their credit profiles and build greater credibility with banks. Today, many are growing their businesses and accessing regular banking facilities. - Smt Nirmala Sitharaman during an interaction with PM MUDRA Yojana beneficiaries in New Delhi
