What is happening in Pakistan? 200% hike on high octane fuel, 20% hike on petrol and diesel happened overnight. Petrol now is sold at 321 PKR a litre. Smart lockdowns announced in Sindh province, so that their fuel can be conserved. Restricting movement, gatherings and public events. Schools are shut for two weeks. Government offices have moved to four day working week. Private offices told to shift 50% staff to work from home. We're not doing any of it. Still some leaders are spreading rumours that there will be lockdown. This rumour mongering should not happen. It's being done to spread fear. Markets and shopping centres are ordered to be closed by 9.30 PM in Pakistan. These are all the media reports. All universities shut down and shifted to online learning in Bangladesh as there's no electricity. Five hour rotational power cuts are happening. Implemented for domestic consumers in the city of Dhaka. Fuel station across Dhaka closed due to shortage of octane and diesel. So, the situation across the world is not good. We're managing in a way that our citizens don't face any difficulty. There's a contrast in price I want to say. In India, nothing has changed. Whereas in Pakistan, plus 20% to plus 200% price depending on petrol, diesel, high octane etc. Bangladesh has rationed stations closed, supply cut 10 to 15%. Excise duty action, we have cut Rs. 10 per litre. Neither Pakistan nor Bangladesh have responded. So, India among these neighbourhood countries is maintaining a level of stability. We're following Hon'ble PM Shri Narendra Modi Ji's guidance on the same. - Smt Nirmala Sitharaman in Rajya Sabha

I want to convey a message to the Income Tax Department. You're not just tax collectors. You're the face of the government's relationship with the taxpayer. Since you're the face of the government's relationship with the taxpayer, this new law gives you a clearer and leaner framework to make it simple, to make it simpler for people who want to understand it better. It must be administered with empathy, fairness and efficiency. I expect every officer to internalise the spirit of this new law. The taxpayer is not your adversary. The taxpayer is your partner in nation building. - Smt Nirmala Sitharaman in New Delhi (1/2)

For many years, in the name of opposing ‘Hindi imposition’, there is a practice of not allowing the study of Hindi & Sanskrit in Tamil Nadu. It is to an extent that we cannot learn Hindi or Sanskrit even if we wish to. You have every right to develop the Tamil Language. But you don’t have the right to prevent those who are willing to learn Hindi or Sanskrit. But you don’t allow us to study Hindi or Sanskrit. - Smt Nirmala Sitharaman. (1/n)

I wish the Hon'ble member (Priyanka Chaturvedi🇮🇳) is a bit more responsible with her facts, particularly the numbers that she's quoted. She said the Appropriation Bill was introduced at PM in the Lok Sabha and "passed within three minutes". I'm astonished! She's not probably taken into note that Lok Sabha debated Supplementary Demands for Grants for 5 hours, 31 minutes & that too over two days. Allotted time was only four hours, but they did this for 5 hours and 31 minutes. Five hours of Charcha happened. I'm sorry, you should be careful with your numbers. In fact, just to give her a consolation, her party member Shri Anil Desai spoke on the debate. They participated and many of their alliance partners also participated. - Smt Nirmala Sitharaman in Rajya Sabha

I heard Hon’ble MP (LS) Abhishek Banerjee's speech very carefully. It's unfortunate that he twisted facts which are known to everyone in this House. Very conveniently he spoke about the life cycle of an individual & lied. Ever since the GST was introduced in 2017, there has been ZERO GST on milk. Is he taking the members of this House as fools? There's no GST on education. Effectively, the GST is exempt. Pre-school to higher secondary education, there's no GST. Education leading to recognised qualifications, there's no GST. On books, textbooks & notebooks, there's no GST since 2017. He even spoke about pencil, sharpener etc. How can someone lie so much? Pencils, sharpeners, erasers, exercise books, notebooks, and maps have zero GST. On Healthcare services (treatment, diagnosis, care), I want to thank the members of the GST Council, there's 0% GST since 1st July, 2017. Health & Life Insurance on Individual plans was brought down to 0% in the Next Gen GST reforms (September 2025). He even mentioned about the fact that an individual is charged GST even after his death. There was no GST on funeral services ever in the first place. May be it's the syndicate running in West Bengal, which will be charging cut money on death. - Smt Nirmala Sitharaman in Lok Sabha.

I've been speaking consistently on mis-selling. Banks should concentrate on their core business. They should make their money on what they've lent. CASA (Current Account Savings Account) money should be their priority. I am glad that the RBI is coming up with guidance on why mis-selling is not going to be entertained. The message should go to the banks that you cannot afford to mis-sell. - Smt Nirmala Sitharaman in New Delhi

I may speak in Hindi, I may speak in English, I may speak in Telugu or I may speak in Tamil. How does it matter to the Hon'ble MP? Because now, with the arrangements made by the Hon’ble Speaker, he can get the translation in any language that he desires. So what is this argument that “she spoke in Hindi, therefore I can’t understand?" The facilities are available. Technology has been used. He can understand in any language he wants. But because he has not read the Bill thoroughly and because he wants to divert from the topic, he is bringing all these things and I take objection to it. - Smt Nirmala Sitharaman in Lok Sabha.

For BSNL, our government has provided three revival packages totalling ₹3.22 lakh crore. We have dealt with the burden of oil bonds, addressed the “Fragile Five” economy, and undertaken bank restructuring and recapitalization. These were not small amounts but those of ₹3 lakh crore - ₹4 lakh crore, and now even fertiliser subsidies. Wherever there were weaknesses in the economy, they were left unaddressed earlier, and we are now paying for all of it. Yet, we are being questioned about GDP growth and fiscal deficit. The reality is that we are clearing the liabilities left behind. On spectrum allocation, after our government came to power, spectrum in bands such as 700 MHz, 800 MHz, 1800 MHz, 2100 MHz, 2500 MHz and 3300 MHz has been provided to BSNL at auction-determined prices for 4G and 5G services. On BSNL, I must respectfully say that every criticism made against it is incorrect. If anything, BSNL was pushed into a critical condition earlier. It was in the ICU, and we have revived it and brought it back on track. The Union Cabinet has approved revival packages for BSNL. The capital infusion between 2022 and 2023 stands at ₹2.26 lakh crore. This includes spectrum allocation, capital expenditure on infrastructure, AGR dues, and restructuring of the PSU. The Make in India mandate for BSNL is a strength, not a restriction. There is no restriction on BSNL. In fact, under the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative, BSNL has placed an order for 1 lakh indigenously developed 4G sites for pan-India deployment. As of 28th February 2026, 97,906 sites have been installed with 4G equipment, out of which 96,103 are already operational. Additionally, the BharatNet Programme is strengthening BSNL further. An amount of ₹1.39 lakh crore has been approved to extend optical fibre connectivity to all villages across the country. - Smt Nirmala Sitharaman in Rajya Sabha

Banks provide locker holders compensation fixed at 100 times the annual locker rent in case of loss. This limit exists because banks do not know or assess the contents of lockers and asking customers to disclose valuables would violate banking confidentiality norms. Since item-wise valuation or insurance isn’t feasible, a standardized compensation framework is applied. Demanding differential coverage would require disclosure of contents, something banking rules don't permit. - Smt Nirmala Sitharaman in Lok Sabha

Since 2014: ✅IITs have increased from 16 to 23 ✅IIMs have increased from 13 to 21 ✅IIITs have increased from 9 to 25, 16 new IIITs. ✅Central Universities have increased from 40 to 48. ✅AIIMS have increased from 7 to 12, of which 16 approved are 12 established. This would not have been possible had the govt not been spending on the Education Sector. - Smt Nirmala Sitharaman during her reply to the Discussion on the Supplementary Demands for Grants – First Batch for 2025-26 in #LokSabha. States receive 100% of State GST (SGST) collected in that state, approximately 50% of IGST collected in the state, and a portion of CGST is also devolved to the states based on the Finance Commission's recommendations. Industrialised states like Tamil Nadu have several companies with pan-India operations and concurrent tax payments. For example, Tamil Nadu is one of the leading automobile manufacturing states in the country. Manufacturers make a profit because these automobiles are sold across the country. Similarly, plantations from Kerala make profits by selling across India. This explains why the location of direct tax collection may not be a fair and equitable principle for the sharing of tax because although the money comes from everywhere across India, tax is paid in the state where the companies are registered. So, if automobile companies selling across India are registered in Sriperumbudur in Tamil Nadu and they pay their taxes from there, it's not just Tamil Nadu's tax money that is there. - Smt Nirmala Sitharaman in Rajya Sabha. I respect the Leader of the Opposition (Mallikarjun Kharge), but I heard him say something - that “you people lynch". I am sorry, but that word should be removed (from the proceedings). The Hon’ble Leader of the Opposition is not right in using that word. If he is speaking about lynching, let me remind him that in Rajasthan - when the Congress party was in power - a tailor was lynched based on a comment made by a BJP spokesperson. Nupur Sharma (Nupur Sharma) had made certain comments on television, and a lynching took place. No action was taken when that lynching occurred during their rule. - Smt Nirmala Sitharaman in Rajya Sabha.

Global public debt has surged to approximately $106 trillion - exceeding 95% of Global GDP.. Many advanced economies that spent decades running expansionary fiscal policies now find themselves with severely constrained policy space precisely when they need it most. Meanwhile, India continues to stand out. Our general government Debt-to-GDP ratio, which includes the States’ debt, at approximately 81%, is the lowest among major economies after Germany. More importantly, India is the only major economy where the IMF projects this ratio to fall significantly to 75.8% by 2030 while the debt outlook for the advanced economies such as US, China, Germany, and others is projected to worsen. - Smt Nirmala Sitharaman in New Delhi (1/n)

Congress built 3 major bridges across the Brahmaputra in 60 years. BJP has built 9, with 5 more in the pipeline, in ten years. That single comparison captures everything. The Bogibeel Bridge — conceived in 1985, delayed for thirty years under Congress, inaugurated by Hon'ble PM Shri Narendra Modi Ji in 2018. The Dhubri-Phulbari Bridge — at cost of₹4,997 crore, 19 km across the Brahmaputra, will cut travel distance from 200 km to 19 km. The Kumar Bhaskar Varma Setu cut travel time from North Guwahati to the city from 90 minutes to 15 minutes. We are building India's first road-cum-rail tunnel under the Brahmaputra — the Gohpur-Numaligarh Tunnel, Cabinet-approved in February 2026, which will cut a 6-hour journey to under 20 minutes. That was literally unthinkable under the Congress. Also, 24,000 Km of roads have been upgraded. - Smt Nirmala Sitharaman in Guwahati (1/n)

I have heard complaints about how mercilessly loan repayments have been followed up by some banks. The government has instructed all banks, both public and private, that harsh steps should not be taken when it comes to process of loan repayments and they should approach the matter with humanity and sensitivity in mind. - Smt Nirmala Sitharaman’s intervention during Question Hour in Lok Sabha.

I'm astonished. There is a member standing there in the well saying and he's coming around now, to say it's not released. How will I release without the parliament passing it? I'm asking you all to pass this, so that money goes for the ex-serviceman welfare. And here is an honourable member saying, it is not released. Can I release it without the parliament passing? You don't want to pass it! - Smt Nirmala Sitharaman in Lok Sabha

60,000 man hours were needed in drafting the new Income Tax Bill. Since 1961 it has not been touched and layers and layers got added to it. A comprehensive review had not happened. So, that work which was taken up, required that many number of hours. I appreciate the CBDT for giving their best to reduce the number of words, simplify the language, made sure its not subject to too many interpretations and ensure that there are clear sections. - Smt Nirmala Sitharaman during celebrations of the 166th Income Tax Day in New Delhi.
