'Kamba Ramayanam' is a great example of Ramayanam in Tamil, written by Kambar. It's not an exact translation of the 'Valmiki Ramayana'. A lot of Tamil thought also goes into it - the way of life on the sea coast, mountains, lifestyles - all that is infused into the Ramayana of Kamba. It was severely criticised by the Dravidian movement. A very prominent Tamil political leader wrote a very abusive version of some elements of the Ramayana, which were on Shringara Rasa. It was written in such a fashion that the Ramayana was treated as obscene. To that extent, they vilified the Ramayana. - Smt Nirmala Sitharaman at the FIHCR's Dr SL Bhyrappa Memorial Lecture in New Delhi (1/n)

2047 is the target year set for achieving Viksit Bharat. It's hardly 20 years from now. So, the speed and scale with which the reforms are happening require a lot more support. Lots more support from people who are talented and have exposure. Lots more support from people who can give ideas for us to carry it forward. And, above all, support in terms of capital, which is so required for a country to meet all its aspirations. - Smt Nirmala Sitharaman in Chicago, USA

The gatekeeping continues. Despite having a doctorate in history and being an elected Fellow of the Royal Historical Society, with multi-volume works built on thousands of primary documents and unread private papers, there were active attempts to dismiss Dr Dr. Vikram Sampath, FRHistS as a “non-historian”, a “popular writer” & an “amateur”, because his findings did not conform. The message from these gatekeepers could hardly be clearer: whatever your doctorate, whatever your citations, without their membership card, you do not get onto the stage. - Smt Nirmala Sitharaman at the FIHCR's Dr SL Bhyrappa Memorial Lecture in New Delhi (1/n)

Allow me a personal reflection on how Dr Bhyrappa first entered my consciousness. Decades ago, I watched 'Vamshavruksha' performed as a play in Tiruchirappalli, Tamil Nadu. Sitting in the audience, watching those characters wrestle with tradition and duty, the tension of that performance stayed with me. I bring this up because the stage is not merely a setting in my memory; it is the central metaphor of what I wish to place before you today. - Smt Nirmala Sitharaman in New Delhi (1/n)

We have set ourselves a certain target, which is to bring the borrowing down to the 50% level of GDP by 2030. Therefore, I will be working on that path. There are advanced economies whose debt is well over 200% of their GDP even now. We have given ourselves a fiscal discipline path on the fiscal deficit as well. We have fulfilled the trajectory. The last mile that had to be reached by 2025-26, we have reached. - Smt Nirmala Sitharaman in Chicago, USA (1/n)

It is meaningful that India came to celebrate Dr SL Bhyrappa. His doctoral thesis bore a title that defined his entire destiny: Satya mattu Soundarya - Truth and Beauty. His scholarly journey was hard-won. In his autobiography ‘Bhitti’, Bhyrappa recalls a childhood marked by severe poverty, the early loss of his mother, an unstable home and the loss of siblings and relatives during the plague. Raised for periods in relatives' homes, he pursued his education through hardship. These realities that he had lived gave his writing its maturity, restraint and unsentimental realism. - Smt Nirmala Sitharaman in New Delhi (1/n)

This is the fault line between authentic Indian liberal values and an imposed liberalism. The first is an ancient habit of debate rooted in 'Purvapaksha', the requirement to state your opponent's case in its strongest, most articulate form before offering a rebuttal. The second is an imported membership card, where a self-appointed gatekeeper decides who gets entry onto the stage. A confident civilisation requires its public discourse to function like an open stage. There must be room on the left side of the stage, on the right side and above all, at the centre. Thinkers must be able to enter from both sides, carry their arguments to centre stage and let ideas contend in the open. It is up to the viewers to think and form a view. - Smt Nirmala Sitharaman at the FIHCR's Dr SL Bhyrappa Memorial Lecture in New Delhi (1/n)

What is happening in Pakistan? 200% hike on high octane fuel, 20% hike on petrol and diesel happened overnight. Petrol now is sold at 321 PKR a litre. Smart lockdowns announced in Sindh province, so that their fuel can be conserved. Restricting movement, gatherings and public events. Schools are shut for two weeks. Government offices have moved to four day working week. Private offices told to shift 50% staff to work from home. We're not doing any of it. Still some leaders are spreading rumours that there will be lockdown. This rumour mongering should not happen. It's being done to spread fear. Markets and shopping centres are ordered to be closed by 9.30 PM in Pakistan. These are all the media reports. All universities shut down and shifted to online learning in Bangladesh as there's no electricity. Five hour rotational power cuts are happening. Implemented for domestic consumers in the city of Dhaka. Fuel station across Dhaka closed due to shortage of octane and diesel. So, the situation across the world is not good. We're managing in a way that our citizens don't face any difficulty. There's a contrast in price I want to say. In India, nothing has changed. Whereas in Pakistan, plus 20% to plus 200% price depending on petrol, diesel, high octane etc. Bangladesh has rationed stations closed, supply cut 10 to 15%. Excise duty action, we have cut Rs. 10 per litre. Neither Pakistan nor Bangladesh have responded. So, India among these neighbourhood countries is maintaining a level of stability. We're following Hon'ble PM Shri Narendra Modi Ji's guidance on the same. - Smt Nirmala Sitharaman in Rajya Sabha

For many years, in the name of opposing ‘Hindi imposition’, there is a practice of not allowing the study of Hindi & Sanskrit in Tamil Nadu. It is to an extent that we cannot learn Hindi or Sanskrit even if we wish to. You have every right to develop the Tamil Language. But you don’t have the right to prevent those who are willing to learn Hindi or Sanskrit. But you don’t allow us to study Hindi or Sanskrit. - Smt Nirmala Sitharaman. (1/n)

The fertiliser shortage was not felt in India because we managed to keep the markets informed about how much we would require. The global supply shrank. The challenges were even greater, whether it was crude oil, LPG or fertilisers. Ships going to procure these supplies were unable to secure adequate insurance cover. Risk premiums had gone up significantly. Through a Budget announcement, we made a pool of funds available so that any additional premium paid by shipping liners due to the risks involved would be supported by the government. - Smt Nirmala Sitharaman in Chicago, USA (1/n)

A focused campaign is something which is required in banking for the youth. India has one of the world's youngest populations. Our young people will increasingly shape the country's patterns of consumption, savings, investment, entrepreneurship and wealth creation. Banking is also the foundational infrastructure of a person’s livelihood journey. Hence, financial capability should develop seamlessly alongside adulthood, not as a reactive, stressful adjustment upon starting one's first professional engagement. - Smt Nirmala Sitharaman during the #PSBConfluence in New Delhi (1/n)

As you return to your institutions, I would like you to ask a simple question: What will we do differently because of these 2 days? The value of these deliberations must ultimately be reflected in what we change and what we achieve. For some, it may be building a stronger relationship with young customers. For others, it may be addressing gaps in priority sector lending, strengthening a business where the bank has been underrepresented, or building a distinctive area of leadership. The answer will not necessarily be the same for every institution. - Smt Nirmala Sitharaman during the #PSBConfluence in New Delhi (1/n)

Viksit Bharat 2047 is not too far away. There couldn’t have been a better time to talk about banking for Viksit Bharat, especially after the grind that all of the PSBs & financial institutions have gone through, recognising difficulties and coming out towards the route of reform. The NPAs are at the lowest ever Indian banking has seen and therefore, there cannot be a better position of strength with which you can take on reforms. - Smt Nirmala Sitharaman during the #PSBConfluence in New Delhi (1/n)

The Bankers' Books Evidence Bill, 2026 is allowed by law, because Entry 45 in the Union List, which is in List I of the Seventh Schedule to the Constitution, empowers Parliament to repeal and re-enact an Act. We are invoking that and repealing the 1891 Act and bringing in the Bankers’ Books Evidence Bill, 2026. The Bill, among various other things that it seeks to do, provides for a technology-neutral legal framework for bankers’ books. - Smt Nirmala Sitharaman in Rajya Sabha (1/n)

Smt Nirmala Sitharaman visited the Sri Siva Satyanarayana Swamy Temple in Mississauga, Canada and offered her prayers. During her visit, she lit a ‘Moksha Deepam’ in solemn remembrance of all those who lost their lives in the tragic flash floods in the Nepal-Tibet region, praying for eternal peace and sadgati for the departed souls.

The 16th Finance Commission has taken both municipalities and urban local bodies, as well as panchayats, into its calculation and the allocation made for urban local bodies and municipalities is far higher than ever before. That is major empowerment of the municipal bodies. Other than that, the central government is also giving a 50-year interest-free loan to the states. And many states are undertaking exemplary asset creation at the municipal level. - Smt Nirmala Sitharaman in Rajya Sabha (1/n)

Our discussions centred around three broad categories. The first one is macroeconomic developments, which we have to assess for ourselves and domestic policy priorities for both countries, each for its own. So India has demonstrated remarkable macroeconomic resilience. We also recognised the complementarities between the two economies, India and Canada, and the considerable scope to deepen investment and economic cooperation. - Smt Nirmala Sitharaman in Toronto (1/n)

I want to convey a message to the Income Tax Department. You're not just tax collectors. You're the face of the government's relationship with the taxpayer. Since you're the face of the government's relationship with the taxpayer, this new law gives you a clearer and leaner framework to make it simple, to make it simpler for people who want to understand it better. It must be administered with empathy, fairness and efficiency. I expect every officer to internalise the spirit of this new law. The taxpayer is not your adversary. The taxpayer is your partner in nation building. - Smt Nirmala Sitharaman in New Delhi (1/2)

Our Public Sector Banks have historically played an important role in ensuring the flow of institutional credit to priority sectors and advancing financial inclusion. Credit to farmers, MSMEs, MUDRA beneficiaries, weaker sections and disadvantaged communities remains a top priority of this Government. Our objective must be to expand credit while also improving the quality of Priority Sector Lending. Its success should be assessed not merely by numerical targets, but by whether the credit is timely, adequate, productive, improving incomes and resilience. - Smt Nirmala Sitharaman during the #PSBConfluence in New Delhi (1/n)
