Came across this old GDC presentation and it's kind of horrifying in retrospect. This segment literally details Bungie iterating the Director into the Portal in D1, realizing it didn't work (for the exact reasons you'd expect), and being forced to backtrack. THIS WAS IN 2013.

The D2 community in its prime was actually so full of frauds, like how did this song never get a Deep Sludge Lullaby level rep. I think this playing after Excision is the most effective soundtrack moment I've ever experienced in my life. Those 10 years flashed before my eyes.

I'm replaying Infinite's campaign and even at the very beginning it's still so special for me man. I get it has issues like its ass ending, but it got 15 y/o me to care about a total boomer IP. I hate that gen alpha/beta likely won't get that if we're in for a decade of remasters
