Two days after police shot and killed a woman who fatally stabbed another woman in Times Square, Kenneth Corey, a 34-year NYPD veteran, joined NY1's Shannan Ferry to break down the officers' response. Corey, who served as chief of department under former Mayor Eric Adams, called the incident "a tragedy all around, and really a complete failure of the system." The NYPD said the attack was unprovoked and random. "What we see from the officers is that they're responding in the way that they've been trained," he said.

New York State Attorney General Letitia James has joined a coalition of attorneys general and the governor of Pennsylvania in suing the U.S. Postal Service to block a new rule that would give the agency control over mail-in voting in federal elections. Under the proposal, states would need to collect basic voter information, such as a person's name and home address, and enter it into a federal ballot mail portal before it can be accepted by the mail service. The attorneys general allege the rule illegally interferes with their constitutional authority to administer elections because it allows the USPS to reject mail. "The president of the United States voted by mail," James said in an interview with NY1's Errol Louis (@errollouis.bsky.social). "It is safe, it's secure, it's been used by a number of states and we're too close to the midterm elections for them to implement this rule, and that's why we are in court again seeking an immediate temporary restraining order stopping this chaos and confusion."

Mayor Zohran Mamdani said the city is implementing several new "first-of-their-kind" measures in order to beat the heat. Thousands of LinkNYC kiosks across the five boroughs will display routes to the nearest cooling center, which Mamdani says shouldn't be more than a 10-minute walk. There will also be "cool vans" stationed around the city to provide hydration and electrolytes, meals (including vegetarian, kosher and halal options), plus transport to the nearest cooling center.

A dresser in the Merchant's House Museum, built in 1832, has been discovered as a secret link to the Underground Railroad — the first of its kind discovered in Manhattan in over 100 years. NY1 received an exclusive first look at the concealed passage, which runs from the second floor down to a pantry hideaway in the basement. The passageway had been known about for decades, but its purpose was unknown to historians. Museum researchers recently discovered that the builder of the Merchant’s House, Joseph Brewster, was a passionate abolitionist who built false floors in integrated abolitionist churches and created this route in his own home to aid freedom seekers. Now, cars that park on the opposite side of the road now can be slapped with a neon sticker in addition to a $65 fine. A similar sticker was previously incorporated in parking enforcement, but it was ultimately discontinued in 2012. City Council Member Gale Brewer lead the reinstatement of the stickers as concerns rose over the cleanliness of streets in Manhattan.
