The protests initially began as a youth movement, known as the Sons of Sough al-Jumah (Friday Market - a district of Tripoli), but escalated into calling for the downfall of the Prime Minister of western Libya, Abdul Hamid Dbeibeh. Donalds, as seen in the video, brought a member of his team and cornered Mason, demanding that she drop a lawsuit against his wife, Erika Donalds. When Mason Classical Academy opened, Byron and Erika Donalds were added to the board in some capacity. Not long after, the Donalds began pressuring Mason to create new schools to make money, while Mason was more concerned with the quality of the already established Academy. Mason refused to go along and sued after an attempted “hostile takeover,” per the Daily Mail. In the video, Donalds is heard demanding that Kelly Mason drop the lawsuit, while her then-13-year-old daughter recorded from a distance. Donalds also reportedly told Mason that he would “crush” and “finish” her during the embarrassing display of the Congressman’s manners and public etiquette. Mason and the Donalds settled the original lawsuit in 2024.
