Saw Agbara Nla and, honestly, I think some of the “revival broke out in the cinema” discourse is more performative than reflective of the actual film. The movie has its strengths, and I genuinely respect the attempt to bring this kind of Christian story to the big screen. But I haven’t seen many reviews engage honestly with the filmmaking itself. I expected something beyond the familiar village “Light vs Darkness” formula, complete with the antagonist eventually becoming a pastor. At several points, it felt like I was watching Abejoye, Esin Ajoji or one of the many similar Mount Zion productions I’ve seen over the years. There were also quite a few inconsistencies in the storyline that I think the producers should genuinely take on board. I hope the producers are not carried away by the hype from the audience, they should listen or demand for real constructive criticism, because religious audience can downplay excellence just because it feels spiritual. That said, it’s a commendable attempt at the big screen, and I genuinely hope we see more Christian productions take this route. Kudos on the casting, cinematography, visual effects and set design. Those were on fire. For me, it’s a 6/10. I honestly think this could have been a banger on YouTube.
