Rewatched Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory for the first time in probably ten years since Gene Wilder died. One underrated scene is the computer who refuses to disclose the location of the Golden Tickets. Hilarious, especially for 1971 and the AI world we live in now.

Watched Austin Powers in Goldmember. I liked how they capped off the trilogy by lampooning the repetitive cliches often seen in third films, while the celebrity cameos are genuinely funny. Loved seeing Michael Caine. Comes full circle since AP is a parody of Harry Palmer.

Wow, this is a huge loss. Taiki Matsuno was very famous as SpongeBob, voicing him from Season 4 onward. He brought joy to so many Japanese children and adults alike. It was seriously impressive how much he matched Tom Kenny’s cadence and demeanor. RIP. ご冥福をお祈りします。

The Japanese dub of The Simpsons doesn’t get enough praise for how well it adapts the material. Here’s the scene where Ned Flanders snaps. The disparaging comments he makes about each character aren’t 100% the same in Japanese as in English, but the translators did a good job.

NHK is currently airing footage of a video game music concert! Greatest hits from Mario, Chrono Trigger and more. Masahiro Sakurai was there as a host too! Really moves me seeing video game music reaching this level of prestige, though Japan always appreciated ahead of the West!

Michael Caine on his working class roots. Many today would probably be surprised to see him so passionate, but at the height of his popularity he really did break class barriers. Before films like Zulu and The Ipcress File, you simply didn’t see Cockneys in those roles.

Hey Arnold probably has my favorite Christmas episode of any television series. The story of Mr. Hyunh being separated from his daughter during the Vietnam War is so heartbreaking. Even moreso after learning that his voice actor Baoan Coleman was present for the Fall of Saigon.

The Manchurian Candidate is one of my favorite films of all time, but the train scene with Frank Sinatra and Janet Leigh has always stood out to me. The non-sequitur dialogue makes no sense and is never explained. It’s lifted from the novel, which also never explained it.

Billy Mays Suicide Putty is one of the most classic videos of golden age late 2000s YouTube poop. It has everything. The low resolution, the intentionally choppy spliced audio, and of course a “This is Sparta!” reference. We didn’t have AI in those days, kids. This was art.
