The Allen Graves experience: Game 4 I finally got the chance/time to watch the Raps SL game vs Miami yesterday. Great game, great win, but I wish the guys played with more urgency with respect to the SL playoff push for the top 4 seeds/tiebreaker. But man, what’s not to love about Allen Graves? The analytics darling of the draft will be the face of Analytics FC at this rate. Literally the definition of jack-of-all-trades. He can dribble, pass, defend, rebound, shoot, set screens, court vision, great bball IQ, making right/winning plays. Every team needs a player like that if they’re serious about winning. The one thing I really liked and appreciated about yesterday’s game is that, he got increased opportunities to bring the ball across the court/playmaking/ball-handling responsibilities. This is the one area I really, really, really want to see him continue to grow and develop. I don’t want him to be a pass-first guy. I want him to be able to know when to pass/when to score, more efficiently, and continue to have better understanding of court vision/awareness etc. If he masters this, you basically got a mini-Nikola Jokić on the team. I agree with what Jeremy Lin said on the broadcast. He’s going to shock a lot of people, and exceed expectations as the 19th pick. He’ll hopefully have a great rookie season. I don’t want to get too high or too ahead of ourselves, but at some point in the future, he could absolutely be in the conversation for steal of the draft. One more game left on Sunday before we gear towards training camp/preseason. I’m excited for the next game. 🎥: NBA/ESPN

Brandon Ingram post-game: “Coach wanted to use me as a screener. He noticed that my man wasn’t coming off of me. He wanted me outside of the action a little bit, and being a receiver.” “At the end of the day, me shooting 9 shots is not going to win basketball games.” “Just got to figure out ways where I can still be effective while they’re doing whatever defence.”

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander on Kawhi Leonard returning to the Toronto Raptors, and what that could do for the growth of basketball in Toronto/Canada: “As long as I can remember, Toronto has loved the Raptors. The country’s loved the Raptors. I don’t think that’ll ever change, no matter who plays for them.” “Adding a guy like that to your roster, no matter where you’re from or what team you are, amplifies everything, your fanbase, your ability as a team on both ends of the floor.” “He’s a really good player. Toronto should be a good team next year for sure.” 🎤: William Lou

Doris Burke shows a ton of love for Scottie Barnes: “You want to talk about a guy who does everything for his team, that is Scottie Barnes.” “I hate to say this, because I feel like we throw the term underrated a lot, I do think Scottie Barnes is underrated at times.” She also believes the duo of Scottie and Kawhi Leonard will mutually benefit both teams. Stan Van Gundy and John Wall are both big fans of the Scottie Barnes/Kawhi Leonard pairing, once the trade goes through: JW: “That [pairing of Kawhi and Scottie] can be special.” SVG: “I’m a big Scottie Barnes fan. He can do everything, guard all 5 positions, great defender, handle, pass. Shooting still needs work, but everything else, he gets on the glass.” JW: “What I like for that is, Scottie Barnes is basically your point-forward, and I think that helps Immanuel Quickley a lot, gives them the opportunity to play off the ball, and be a scorer and a knockdown shooter they need.” “I like that you get a closer. If it [the Kawhi trade] goes through, you get Kawhi. That’s that closer that you need in that 4th quarter. SVG: “Yeah, because they didn’t really have guys that can get their own and score.” “Scottie Barnes can get his own, but he’s just not the level of shooter that Kawhi Leonard is.” JW: “And the one guy they did have (Brandon) Ingram. But he got hurt, so it didn’t really work as much.” ( 🎥: Prime )

Jake Fischer on DeMar DeRozan’s potential next team, after his contract got waived by the Sacramento Kings: -The two teams that could be in the race for DeMar would be the Miami Heat and Toronto Raptors. -He thinks “there’s a lot of excitement in Toronto” regarding a potential DeMar reunion. -He believes DeMar did have a lot of interest in joining the Miami Heat before he joined the Sacramento Kings. -The Lakers and Clippers, to his understanding, are not in the DeRozan sweepstakes as of now (Lakers are more so focused on getting guys like Kuminga/getting players more on Luka Dončić’s timeline). The Seth Lundy show: Game 3 It’s the second straight game where Seth dropped 20+ points. It’s also another really efficient game from him, going 8-13 FG, 4-7 3PT, and 1-1 FT. But unlike the last game where he did most of his work in the first 3 quarters, Seth tonight did most of his work in the last 3 quarters, particularly in the 4th. Clutch 3s, a big assist to Jaden Bradley, a steal. But most importantly, the block that won his team the game. He showcases more of the defensive skills he’s capable of showing, he’s going to draw interest by a lot of NBA teams. I can’t wait to see how he does in the next game. So excited.

Kyle Lowry on Kawhi Leonard returning to the Toronto Raptors: “I think the moves Bobby is making… they know what they’re going to do. They’re trying to win another championship, staring with [Kawhi].” “You get him to that point, your championship is the only aspiration, and that’s why he’s here.”

Paul Pierce, Tony Allen, and Danny Green went OFF after listening to Brandon Ingram’s postgame comments. 😳 PP: “For him to go to the press conference and say coaches made me a screener, or me getting 9 shots, that has nothing to do with coaches[…] you a number one (option), you an all-star, that’s not their fault.” “If you sitting there, and you just sitting back to the side… no. Be vocal about that. If I got one shot at the end of the first quarter, and I’m our number option, there’s a problem. There’s definitely a problem.” “Is Brandon Ingram the guy on this team? Is he the guy? Get the rebound, and bring it up, and do something with it. Say something in the timeout!” “I always get mad at players that go to the press conference after, who the number one option, talking about, ‘I only got this many shots.’ No, that ain’t happening, homie.” DG: “I’m just not a fan of the press conference.” “If the series is over, then you can say some things that you saw that happened. But after game one…” “Maybe Darko was trying to use screening to get you to mismatch to switch off. But, you be a screener and still demand the ball. Set a good screen, get the mismatch, go get the ball.” “They need a floor general. That’s probably why you’re missing (Immanuel) Quick’. But yeah, he didn’t need to speak on it.” TA: “For him to get up there, and say that, I’m like ‘ahh.’ Too early (in the series), though. I can see if that was Game 6 or 7.” DG: “That’s not a good sign from Brandon Ingram. I don’t know, man.” (Via. No Fouls Given)

The Toronto Raptors are training at the ASB GlassFloor Athletes Lab in Orlando and I got to say, the technology is MINDBLOWING. Using LED lights to change to any court you want (even the NBA Cup courts), to drawing up X’s and O’s that show up on the court. 😳 Future is here.

Matt Bonner, who was on the Raptors when Kobe Bryant dropped 81 points on them, does not think Bam Adebayo’s 83-point game is as impressive as Kobe’s 81: “When someone has a game like that, you want to think they were on fire, or they were in the zone, and with Bam, he was 7-22 from 3. If someone was 7-22 from 3, I’m closing out, sure, I’m not like, ‘this guy’s a threat to break the 2nd-most points in a game.’” “It’s a fun story, but apples and oranges if you’re comparing it to Kobe.” “When I think of greatest performances in NBA history, that’s what I picture (Kobe 81), not someone who shot 7-22 from 3, under 50% from the floor, and 42 free throws.” (🎥: Sportsnet)

Dillon Brooks went OFF on DeMar DeRozan’s tenure with the Toronto Raptors 😳: DB: “Raptors couldn’t get over the hump, right?” A00: “What hump? They got over it!” LOW: “Why couldn’t they?” DB: “Why? They got DeRozan out of there.” “I’ll be real for the city, bro. DeRozan was not holding his weight out there.” “He couldn’t win. He made the playoffs every year. One time a 1 seed. One time a 5 seed. He run into LeBron, can’t do nothing.” “You can choke, but you can’t go to media and say, like, ‘Can’t do nothing without LeBron.’”

Fred VanVleet on the 2018-19 Raptors: “Me and Kyle [Lowry], text a couple times a week, but every probably twice a month or once a month, we’ll share s**t like, that team we had bro, that’s the HIGHEST level of basketball I’ve ever seen in my life, with my own eyes.” [via. Unguarded Podcast]

LeBron James on Brandon Ingram: “BI is an unbelievable talent. I had him in my first year in LA, and he was a young stud then” “Season vet now, super mature now. His game is mature. He’s gotten better and better, and I love to see him thrive.” He also showed love to some other first year in LA teammates, including Lonzo Ball, Alex Caruso, Josh Hart, and Ivica Zubac.

Fred VanVleet shared a story about a conversation he had with Masai Ujiri, and something that stood out to me in the story was, “The only guy I didn’t pay, I traded him to the team he wanted to go to.” I wonder who FVV was referring to. 👀 🤔 (🎥: Out The Mud Podcast )
