Command Sergeant Major William D. “Billy” Waugh was not just a Green Beret. He was one of the men who proved what Special Forces could do. A Texas kid who enlisted in 1948, he fought in Korea, earned the beret in 1954, and went to war with 5th Group and MACV-SOG. In June 1965 at Bong Son he was shot through the legs, the foot, and the forehead. North Vietnamese troops stripped him and left him for dead. He lived. He went back. He was the first man to HALO with a nuclear warhead strapped to his ankle — to put the thing on the ground, pull the war out by the roots, and end it. He retired as sergeant major and joined the CIA. In Sudan it was time to fight. He got the photos of Carlos the Jackal, set the pattern, and helped spring the trap. They caught his ass. Same city, he jogged past bin Laden’s compound and came within thirty meters. Close enough to kill him with a rock. Close enough, he said, to kill him with a fucking pencil — through the eye, not the heart, because a miss would only piss him off. After 9/11 he went back into Afghanistan with a CIA–Special Forces team after the same man. More than fifty years. Silver Star. Eight Purple Hearts. His mentality never changed: My guns are just as good as theirs. He died in 2023 at ninety-three. From the top of the Agency the line was simple: you will never know a hundredth of what Billy Waugh accomplished for this country. Almost none of it was written down. Verbal orders.
