Khuzestan is the heart of Iran’s oil industry. Videos from Ahvaz tonight show thick smoke engulfing parts of the city after today’s strikes. Whether the targets were oil facilities or military sites, the environmental damage and public health consequences could affect civilians long after the bombing ends. Ahvaz is a city where major oil infrastructure and some military facilities are located within or near densely populated urban areas. That makes the principles of military necessity, distinction, proportionality, and precautions under international humanitarian law more critical than ever. From what I see, the dominant view is the will to raise the costs of war on the Trump admin as much as possible, increasing the risk of an even wider and more destructive war… almost five full months into a war that was supposed to last 4-6 weeks…
