This morning, House and Senate Republicans called out state and local leaders for politicizing an active investigation, inflaming fear, and undermining law enforcement before all the facts of Thursday's federal officer-involved shooting were released. We now know that the individuals involved were not an innocent married couple. According to federal authorities, they were unlawfully present in the country, connected to a violent gang, and involved in a prostitution ring operating here in Oregon. That information was publicly available before a Thursday press conference held by the Governor, the Portland Mayor, members of the City Council, and state legislators. Yet none of those facts were shared with the public at that time. Instead, we watched as federal law enforcement officers were publicly condemned, compared to secret police, and portrayed as threats to the community while critical facts were withheld. That is not leadership.

Rep. Jeff Helfrich asking Oregon leaders to stop politicizing crime and start enforcing the law. “Right now, too much of this conversation is being pulled into the same place we saw in 2020. Facts get blurred. Motives get assigned. And criminal activity gets reframed as something else entirely. That helps no one. Especially the people who live in the neighborhoods most affected by violence, trafficking, and drugs. Here’s the reality. When organized crime is involved, you don’t solve the problem by arguing about labels. You solve it by dismantling the system causing the damage.”

Yikes. Don't you just love it when the party that claims to be on the side of women talks to women like this? Today, multiple House Republicans boycotted today's session in solidarity with Rep. Shelly Boshart Davis who was publicly harassed by Senator Gorsek Friday. To be clear, Rep. Boshart Davis was yelled at for calling the Democrats' $15 BILLION transportation tax package "grossly irresponsible" on behalf of a majority of Oregonians that if given the chance, would have VOTED NO.
