Well...Georgia is up to their usual! Tre Phelps become 1 of 7,000,000 baseball players to hit a home run, and decided to taunt the Liberty dugout, the 1st baseman, and put on a "look at me" show all the way around the bases. Then, he got tossed, and so did his coach, who is TOTALLY complicit in the way his team acts. Phelps now will have to miss the rest of this game, and either the "if" game or the 1st game of the Super Regional. I personally like bat flips when they're done out of excitement and not directed at any one person. But, when you start waving to the 1st baseman & the other team's dugout. That's ridiculous. Hopefully, Liberty has a team full of Brock Thompsons! #gopokes #okstate

One of the worst byproducts of the loss to Tulsa on Saturday is that Rodney Fields, Hauss Hejny, and Gavin Freeman all had big days. And Kasen Carpenter, our center last year, had a great week at center for Kansas. So, while we spent a lot more on this roster, specifically at the spots mentioned, the production, after one game, doesn't support it. Now, it's Game 1, so this conversation is very premature, but OSU fans definitely have gotten it started. And the appearance is that it digs into more of a long-term concern that OSU fans may have come away with, which is the potential for misses in talent evaluation and/or development, both of which are long-term issues. I say all of that to say that will never be my takeaway. After covering Minor League baseball as closely as I have, I can tell you that even the best scouts miss, every year, and quite a bit. And that's all they do is evaluate the guys they get signed. There is absolutely no way this staff was going to be able to avoid misses when turning over this much of the roster. You just have to hope that none of them end up being egregious, or at the highest-profile positions/with the highest-profile players. Not that the other players don't matter, but there's a reason some get paid more than others, so just spitting some facts there. For the time this staff had, and for all the things they had to do to get this operation running, I will not ever second-guess if they chose a preference for familiarity when building their first roster here. To be transparent, I think they did that, and I think they have done that with their depth chart as well, but I could be 100% wrong on that. Having said all that, this is a situation that no one can hide from because when kids from the State of Oklahoma, who were good at OSU, get replaced by new players who were, almost certainly, chosen over them, OSU fans are going to pay attention because it's personal to a certain extent. There's no avoiding that, whether it's fair or not, which I don't think it is. But it's why I felt it was important to make this post. That's part of the role of the dice when replacing so many players. There are always going to be misses when you do that. No one can avoid that! #GoPokes #OkState

Okay, seriously... listen very carefully! Remember the name, Eli Ramirez. I have personal experience with this one, and I'm telling you, this kid has IT. He hit 96 on his first pitch of Fall scrimmages on Saturday. And I know this from first-hand knowledge, he's one competitive sumbeach. And he's a tremendous athlete, like crazy explosive athlete, and he wrestled in high school, which all fits what he is. Definite power arm, right mental makeup, with the potential to be a dominant high-leverage power arm at the back end of games. I am SUPER pumped about this dude! He committed to OU, eventually ended up at Murray State JC, and I'm very glad he landed at OSU. Honestly, I didn't recognize him because I hadn't seen him since he was 15. But then he threw his first pitch, and I was like, who the $%#$ is that? Then when I found out who he was, I was like, OH, that makes sense. #GoPokes #OkState

Coach Morris is a straight shooter, no question, and so let's follow that lead. So, we mentioned in the pregame yesterday that if yesterday did not have a good presentation, all of the OSU fans who feel jaded with what happened to Coach Gundy would come out in force. And that has happened. Here's the deal! He's not our coach anymore. There's no need to get back into the weeds of that situation on social media, but if you want a lengthy segment on why things had to happen, check out my postgame reactions on YouTube. So, if you're one of those people, here's my question for you... What do we do now? Think of it as an umpire and a manager arguing. When does it stop and everyone move on to the next play? You can't argue for the rest of eternity, and there comes a point where, even if you're right, you're doing more harm than good. So, again, are you going to continue to be a fan, or are you going to take your ball and go home after one game in a new era with 92 new players? As per Coach Morris, it was a terrible debut, and there's just no other way to put it. There was nothing about yesterday that will motivate OSU fans to be excited about this new brand, or Coach Morris in particular. And that's disappointing because he's a terrific coach. I still believe he's 1000% the right guy for OSU, and he's going to get this program turned around. But that's only if we let him, which means not jumping off a cliff after one game. It's okay to be so blown up right now that you can't see straight. That just means you care! But don't take it past that. Leave the "let's fire a guy after one game" out of the equation. It's crazy talk, and it's based on emotion, not sound analysis. And it does OSU absolutely NO good! But back to the game. We played slow, we were lethargic, we looked disinterested, and anything but confident. And the play calling, IMO, was in a "phone booth" way more than I thought we'd see. We didn't stretch the field much, and we didn't throw to our tight end in the middle of the field like I hoped we'd see return to an OSU offense. We didn't hit receivers in position to get yards after the catch, specifically with them moving vertically so they can have a head of steam, and we threw sideways way too much. We didn't block, and our RBs didn't bust their own holes. Mestemaker either held on to the ball too long, dumped it too fast, threw off the back foot, or heaved up late balls across his body while scrambling against drop-8 coverage. Our defensive performance in the 1st half was probably the only somewhat of a silver lining. But it too gave up over 100 yards rushing in the 2nd half to a team that won 4 games last year with a G6 schedule. They also gave up over 6.4 yards per play, while we averaged only 4.3. So I can't count that as an overall silver lining either. We turned the ball over 3 times, didn't win a 50/50 ball right before the half in man coverage, and then had a stupid penalty from one of my favorite players that gave them a 2nd chance to punch in a touchdown, which they did. We needed momentum, and special teams could have been an area where we could have gained some, but we didn't do anything there either. This was a disaster ALL the way around! There's just no other way to analyze this. But it's one game, just the 1st game of an Era that I still believe is going to be successful. And, to make sure we're ALL accountable, I have over-hyped this offense and didn't see any way that Tulsa would stop us. That's on me... My bad! I eat that the same way Drew will eat his performance, or Coach Morris, or anyone else. This team can still end up being what he hoped it would, but obviously the timeline has changed. So, now we have to transition into a "growth" mindset, which, TBH, is disappointing when you pay the QB $3.5 million dollars. But it is what it is! See ya' next week at Boone Pickens! Video of Coach Morris is courtesy of Pistols Firing. For the full postgame interview #GoPokes #OkState

Jack Cagianello made his OSU debut, at least for the scrimmages this weekend, and flashed a good sinker/slider mix. This guy can really spin it, and he spins it with firm velo, so that's another problem for the OSU opponents to deal with. He's transferring in from Weatherford JC, so he has college experience, and he's known to have a great mentality and makeup! #GoPokes #OkState

Kollin Ritchie Details! In case you were wondering why Kollin Ritchie didn't get drafted until the 20th Round, here’s exactly what happened, and I have ALL of this confirmed. Ritchie was presented with multiple early-round options that were either below slot value or fell short of what he wanted. He tried to negotiate but couldn't find middle ground, and because he knew he had a GREAT situation at OSU, he held his ground. Multiple teams continued to try to find the money it would have taken to sign him throughout much of the draft, but ultimately did not come up with it. So, the pick from the Cardinals was more of a courtesy pick at that point because they drafted him without him hearing about it. So, they had to know he was not going to take their offer, which is why the term “courtesy” is being used here. Bottom Line: Kollin chose OSU over this draft! At least everything short of a perfect draft slot and a financial package that NO ONE could expect anyone to turn down. That's along the same lines as how he's continued to choose OSU in this era of NIL bidding wars as well. Those who got drafted have until the 27th to decide what they're going to do, but Kollin announced his intentions immediately, which goes to show how excited he is to come back and help this team win. He is as loyal as it gets and made this choice because he loves OSU and Stillwater, and he wants to win for this program, the University, his coaches, and the fans. Talk about Loyal and True! It doesn't get much better than THAT! Much appreciation & MAD respect, Kollin! You wanna know what an OSU baseball player looks like...This Dude is IT! #gopokes #okstateKollin

Message to Matt Quintanar, the player who slid into Aidan Meola & Texas Tech baseball (Texas Tech Baseball) as a program. Let me preface this post with some evidence of the "respect" I have had for the Texas Tech baseball program. That program has always had a "West Texas" wild & craziness/EDGE, that, TBH, I've been jealous of at times. Don't believe those words, see for yourself where at least this 1 person is coming from. I've had the opportunity to interview multiple former Red Raiders who are still playing/pitching professional baseball. Clayton Beeter Ryan Sublette Also, Kyle Robinson is still one of my favorite pitchers I've EVER watched pitch at O'Brate, and I've communicated with him, even since he's been a pro, when he was playing in Tulsa last June with Midland at the AA level. And, Matt Gardner, the former Texas Tech pitching coach, pitched at OSU, and Geoff Haxton, your PxP, grew up in Stillwater, and we are personal friends. So, I respect Tech and enjoy the rivalry. NOW, let's get into the "Nuts & Bolts." There's a difference between playing with an edge and being "dirty". There's a right way to play, and hard slides are a part of it, but that slide was insanely inappropriate, and a VERY bad look all around for an otherwise VERY good player. I honestly didn't have an issue with the chirping, because that, in my view, went two-sided, but the slide was "Busch League". And if you do that in pro ball, completely unprovoked, at least by the player you slid into, you'll only do it once. I'm not telling you anything you don't know because your brother was a pro baseball player, so I'm not reinventing the wheel with that comment. And, YOU played at Blinn, and I KNOW they didn't teach you that, and YOU will, almost assuredly, be a Pro after your time at Tech. I'm about 100% confident in that! That is, unless you don't get THAT act cleaned up. And, maybe the most disappointing part of the whole thing is that the player you slid into is an ELITE human being who has fought through MORE injuries than any College baseball player possibly EVER. And then, you have the piece of it where you actually cost your team, one of the best hitting teams in America, the chance to keep playing and come back to win the game. And, finally, as ANGRY as that play left OSU fans, YOUR OWN teammates, fans & coaches, should have come away from that infinite times more angry than any of us. That's because WE WON THE GAME, and YOU didn't. And, I'll promise you, you WEREN'T going to whip Aidan Meola & Hudson Barrett's ass, hate to break that news to you. And, to read your lips as you walked off the field, yes, that was BS, BS on YOUR part! Hope that sinks in! #gopokes #okstate

This kid pitching for Alabama is special. He throws a 2500 RPM fastball, which means his ball carries and will hold the bottom of the zone, as opposed to continuing to sink. Gotta stay on the low Fastball! Which is tough, because his changeup tumbles out of the zone, and they look the same coming out of his hand. Gotta hold this game and strike late, been sayin' that all night. #gopokes #okstate

Dee Lockett took the mat at 165 in a very highly rated match against Bianci of Little Rock, who came in ranked #5. Lockett had the right leg of Bianchi for a good while on the edge of the mat off a double, got control, and got his takedown. Bianchi escaped, then Lockett hit another takedown on a move that I have no idea what it was. Can anyone help with that move? It was 6-1, Lockett had over 30 seconds of riding time, and the goal was to finish the period on top. And, he did it to take a 6-1 lead to the 2nd with 55 seconds of riding time. That was a pretty awesome job, because Bianchi was VERY active on bottom. Neither wrestler scored in the 2nd period, so the score was 6-2 moving to the 3rd, Lockett on bottom. Lockett quickly escaped to make the score 7-1 with 1:45 left in the match, which is how it ended. #gopokes #okstate

Casey Swiderski did not wrestle on Friday, so 4-Time State Champion out of Tuttle, and True Freshman, Beau Hickman got the call at 149. It was a great match as Hickman went toe to toe with Herman, who is the #23-ranked wrestler at 149. Herman hit a nice shot early in the match to get the first takedown of both that match and the dual overall. Hickman got out pretty quickly, so the score was 3-1. Herman hit another good shot, but Hickman somehow got out of it. It looked like he was going to be the one to get the points, but both wrestlers went off the mat, and neither could score for the remainder of the period, so 3-1 headed to the 2nd. Hickman started in the top position in the 2nd period and rode Herman for the entire period for 1:44 riding time. So, an escape in 44 seconds or less would tie the match. Hickman got out fast, so riding time had the match tied, next takedown wins. Herman hit a high crotch for a takedown to take a 6-2 lead, then went to work on the riding time, but Hickman got out in time to secure the riding time. A stall call was called on Herman, so the score was 6-4, with 1 point of riding time coming for Hickman with 59 seconds left, both wrestlers on their feet. Hickman shot a single, and it was a good move, but Herman blocked it, then he bled the clock. Hickman shot again, Herman countered, and that was it. 6-5, Herman won after the riding time was added, GREAT match. #gopokes #okstate

Here's a good look at Kyler Zagar from Friday afternoon's scrimmage. Zagar is a 6-1 Sophomore out of Perry who features a "centerpiece" changeup. His changeup looks just like his fastball coming out of his hand, and tumbles like crazy. If he can spot and move the fastball to parts of the zone that can't be ambushed, then tunnel that changeup off of that, he can get a LOT of outs. Fastball is a 2-seam, so everything he throws moves, and it's coming from fairly long levers, so there's a TON of deception to his delivery. You'll see 90-93 go up on the board and SWEAR that it's quite a bit hotter than that. He also features a curveball that he can "steal" strikes with, then also bury hitters on occasion. Zagar spent a year at Cowley and pitched for "Lefty", and he played for Bret Bouher at Perry, who played at OSU, so he comes from GREAT stock! #gopokes #okstate

Bryce LeBlanc got the ball on Friday and flashed some good stuff. LeBlanc recorded 4 Ks against Cowley County in the game the 2 played a couple of weeks ago, and that was in just 2 innings of work. Long levers, explosive fastball, good slider, and mixes in a changeup. 3-pitch mix with lots of movement and an execution focus. LeBlanc is originally from Lubbock but transferred in from Odessa College. 6-7 lefties with good stuff and execution focus don't just fall off trees, so super excited about the potential here. #gopokes #okstate

Oklahoma State is very lucky they were able to get a handful of their younger players to campus, and Brock Thompson is at the top of that list. That's not my opinion, that comes from folks who know a lot more about this than I do. He has the potential to have great "bat-to-ball" skills while also hitting the ball fairly consistently above 100 mph. His approach has been centered on hitting the ball hard, and hitting line drives, which still is, and will always be THE MOST successful ball off of any bat. Hard-hit Line Drives will always be the king, that will never change, and that's Brock Thompson. He has a treasure trove of tools in his bag that very few have, not an exaggeration. Again, that's coming from people who know this stuff a lot better than I do! #GoPokes #OkState

Congrats to Ethan Lund for making his College Baseball debut, and in a HUGE spot. Things weren't perfect for the 6'6 Freshman from Fishers, Indiana, but he flashed some really good stuff from the left side. This dude has great stuff, is super competitive, is already hitting in the 94 range, is 6'6, and has a big future! His coaches showed a lot of confidence in him by putting him in the position he is in today. Valuable experience! #GoPokes #OkState

Charlie Carter is one of the MOST underrated aspects of this team. The way he blocks breaking balls gives the OSU pitchers total freedom to "let loose" of their "swing and miss" breaking balls that tumble in the dirt. Here's our thoughts on him from the most recent podcast. #GoPokes #OkState Charlie Carter

Update on Jaxson Crull! Crull is starting a job with ONEOK as a Systems analyst at the end of the month. He knew after this season he was going to hang it up, and left OSU very happy with his time as a Cowboy. Although he wasn’t an every day guy at times, he loved helping find a way for the team to win. But, just because his playing days are over doesn't mean his connection to the program will be any less. Not Close! He's gonna remain connected to the program by coming back to visit a lot and seeing the guys still on the team. Ian was his roommate and those two were super close. Crull made it very clear that he thinks it's great for the team to have Ian and Aidan back because they were two of the biggest leaders on the team last year. It does not matter what walk of life Crull partakes in, he will ALWAYS rise to the top. Whoever gets him, in whatever walk of life, is getting total quality. #GoPokes #OkState
