Prince George is a prime example of the hollowing out of once thriving and productive small towns across British Columbia. Deaths of despair. Mills and manufacturing jobs lost. Street disorder and crime. Damaged businesses and eroded downtowns. The addictions industry thrives while individuals and communities suffer. BC’s progressive drug politics didn’t fail by accident. Policymakers adopted a model that concentrated active addiction in taxpayer-funded drug dens, expanded toxic supply, and softened enforcement. A large network of NGOs, housing operators, drug providers, and related contractors in British Columbia receives steady public funding tied to the ongoing presence of active addiction and homelessness. It was always an approach and incentive structure that was doomed to fail. Success is linked to engagement metrics, not to reducing the number of people using and on the street. Recovery and abstinence are not primary goals. We don’t need to claim deliberate sabotage, but the incentive pattern is real and observable. Higher client numbers justify larger budgets and more sites. Until the incentives reward recovery instead of sustained addiction, the cycle will continue, and cities across British Columbia will keep paying the price.
