Professor Marandi didn’t mince words when he laid out the reality of who holds power in Israel: "You're from eastern Europe. You're European. All of you are Ashkenazi Jews who are running the country, they're from eastern Europe." He was right. The people who built the modern state, staffed its early institutions, and still dominate its political, military, and cultural elites are overwhelmingly Ashkenazi Jews whose families came from Poland, Ukraine, Russia, Czechoslovakia, and the rest of Eastern Europe. They are European. They are not indigenous to Palestine. They arrived, displaced the native Palestinian population, and established a state that continues to be run by the same Eastern European networks. Marandi simply said out loud what the historical record shows. The early Zionist leadership, the founders of the state, and the continuing power structure all trace back to Eastern Europe. Pretending otherwise is a deliberate rewrite of history.

Israel just demolished a 120-year-old home in Ni’lin because it didn’t have a building permit. The house was built around 1906. The State of Israel was founded in 1948. The occupation of the West Bank began in 1967. So the paperwork they demanded was issued by an authority that didn’t exist when the walls went up. Bold bureaucratic innovation: retroactive zoning for a country that arrived later than the stone. Imagine the clerk: “Sir, we’re going to need the Ottoman-era permit, the British Mandate stamp, and the Israeli one you never applied for because we hadn’t invented ourselves yet. Also the land is now strategically important. Have a nice day.” Nothing says “rules-based order” like fining a building for missing a form that predates the form-maker. Next they’ll ticket the olive trees for growing without a 2024 agricultural license. Free Palestine. And maybe start requiring permits for founding states on other people’s already-built villages.

In December 1948, Albert Einstein and other Jewish intellectuals warned Americans that Menachem Begin’s party was built on terrorism and fascism. On December 4, 1948, the New York Times published a letter signed by Einstein, Hannah Arendt, Sidney Hook, and more than two dozen others. It was written as Begin, former leader of the Irgun, toured the United States to raise support for his new Freedom Party (Tnuat Haherut / Herut). The letter said the party was “closely akin in its organisation, methods, political philosophy and social appeal to the Nazi and Fascist parties.” It described the Irgun as “a terrorist, right-wing, chauvinist organisation” and said the movement preached “an admixture of ultra-nationalism, religious mysticism, and racial superiority.” Terrorism against Jews, Arabs, and the British, the signers wrote, was a means; a “leader state” was the goal. They specifically pointed to the April 1948 attack on Deir Yassin, where Irgun and Lehi forces killed large numbers of Palestinian villagers, as an example of the methods the party carried into politics. The letter urged Americans not to be misled by Begin’s visit or by post-independence talk of freedom and democracy. Begin’s party later became a core of Likud. The warning Einstein signed was not about some fringe faction. It was about the political lineage that still shapes Israeli policy toward Palestinians.

In 1938, the British Army trained Zionist fighters to raid Palestinian villages. British officer Orde Wingate formed the Special Night Squads and taught Haganah members—including future ITF commanders Yigal Allon and Moshe Dayan—night raids, ambushes, and collective punishment tactics against Arab villages during the Palestinian Revolt. Ten years later, those same students led the attack on the Palestinian town of al-Lidd (Lydda). In July 1948, Allon commanded Operation Dani. Dayan led a raid through the town. Israeli forces killed hundreds of Palestinians (including civilians sheltering in a mosque) and expelled nearly the entire population—tens of thousands of people—in one of the largest expulsions of the Nakba. British training in 1938, Zionist application in 1948. The continuity is documented.

A fully armed American man showed up at Jake Lang’s August 18 anti-Islam protest ready to play “crusader.” He came to investigate the constant claims that Muslims are a threat. What he found instead was the truth. “It’s not what everybody’s saying,” he said after spending time in the area. The reality on the ground was nothing like the fear-mongering narratives pushed every day. He stayed to help keep the peace and now has “a little mercy” for people still trapped in that brainwashing — the same brainwashing that dehumanizes Palestinians, excuses collective punishment, and treats an entire people as the enemy. Palestine was never empty. The camera already knew that. In 1896–97, the Lumière brothers sent Alexandre Promio to film the Holy Land under Ottoman rule. What he captured is among the earliest moving images of Palestine: Jaffa Port, the courtyard of Bethlehem’s Church of the Nativity, Jerusalem’s railway station, sacred sites, and people in the streets. Muslims. Christians. Jews. Walking the same gates, the same roads, the same land. Not a slogan. Not a later map. Actual footage of a living country called Palestine — ports, churches, stations, markets, worshippers — before partition, before occupation, before the claim that this was a vacant stage waiting for someone else.
