My little girl, Lian, tries to create her own small world of joy inside the tent. With no electricity or television, she found in the tent’s window her own “screen.” She stands before it, dancing and playing, asking me to sit and watch what she calls “the TV.” In every movement, there’s a simple yet painful message: the children of Gaza need life, play, and education—just like all the children of the world.

I know that no agreement, no ceasefire, and no talk of peace will ever bring back the innocent face of my child, Rakan. Nor will my daughter, Layan, ever have the chance to live those moments with her brother in this life. This was the greatest crime the occupation committed against my family… but it did not kill Rakan alone. It has killed more than 40,000 children, and behind every child is a family carrying the same pain I carry today, the same emptiness that can never be filled. This sorrow will never leave us. It will continue to haunt every detail of our days and memories, because the tragedy is still ongoing, and because loss here never stops…

While preparing bread with my daughter Layan, I managed to buy just one kilo of flour, which we used to bake 12 loaves using a primitive method over fire. Despite all the hardships and tragedies around us, her laughter as she watched the bread bake was enough to make me forget all the exhaustion. In her eyes, I see life and in her joy, I find a reason to keep going. #Gaza

This is not just debris; it’s what remains of a tower that once sheltered hundreds of families, reduced to ashes in an instant after a heavy airstrike. People walk through the ruins, faces pale, eyes lost, with no idea where to go. Every stone holds a memory, every speck of dust conceals stolen dreams, silenced children’s laughter, unfinished meals, and a sense of safety buried with the past. Here, beneath this destruction, not only buildings lie in ruin — but lifetimes, hopes, and untold stories are buried too.

I asked her: “Why are you sad, my love?” She whispered with a trembling voice that cut through my heart: “Why did they kill my brother Rakan? Now I have no one to play with… Why did the Jews kill him? I want to go to heaven to be with him and play with him…” I froze. The world collapsed around me. I had no answer—only bitter tears streaming down my face. Layan has been deprived of her brother’s laughter… just as thousands of children in Gaza have been deprived of their fathers, mothers, brothers, and entire families. I gathered myself, wiped her tears, and said: “Come, Layan, I will be Rakan for you. I will be your playmate.” And we played together until her laughter filled the tent. In that laughter, I found all the meaning of life. Her smile… is the entire world to me. Layan says in the video: "I made a sea and a sun out of clay toys, and I will make a moon, a girl, and a boy… and I’m sending you a kiss."
