This Asia Cup will be remembered in history for all the wrong reasons. You either don't play or you play with grace. It was despicable from the Indian team to not shake hands in the first match. There is no bigger mockery of Pahalgam victims and India's armed forces than to suggest that the Indian team gave a strong answer to Pakistan in a cricket match. If I had lost someone in that terrorist attack, I'd be furious with people lauding the Indian captain for dedicating a cricket win to India's armed forces. It was a facade. Last night, the Pakistani team fueled that jingoism with their gestures, and made it worse. The Indian government could have simply decided to not play Pakistan. But what's more important, clearly, is milking money in the name of nationalism. After all, it's the economy, stupid.

Since the Asia Cup was reduced to cheap jingoism, I'm reminded of better times. Chennai. 1999. Pakistan defeated India by 12 runs in a thrilling test match. Pak team took a victory lap, and every single person stood up & clapped. Harsha Bhogle on commentary said, "I have never seen a stronger statement in favour of sport than this...There has been no jingoism." This Asia Cup was anything but a strong statement in favour of sport. In fact, it showed our sport in extremely poor light. And even the commentators have been reduced to a pale shadow of their own past.

Last year, SEN Radio sacked senior journalist Peter Lalor over tweets that expressed solidarity with Palestinians. Usman Khawaja, in response, refused to do an interview with SEN in solidarity with Lalor. As Khawaja announces his retirement from cricket, he leaves behind a legacy that goes far beyond his numbers. Khawaja was a bloody good cricketer. He won't be ranked among the greats of all time. But he's been a much better role model than most of our cricketing gods could ever be. In his retirement press conference, he speaks about the importance of speaking out on issues outside of cricket. He reiterated his support for Palestine, and called out politicians for sowing hate and Islamophobia. Sadly, we don't make cricketers like that anymore. You'll be missed Uzzie. At a time most cricketers prefer to stay quiet, worry about endorsements and shy away from controversies, you walked the talk. At a time most of our cricketers towed the line of the government, you spoke up even if it meant it made you unpopular in some sections. On field, you were brilliant. Off the field, you were even better. Happy retirement, Usman Khawaja, you'll be missed ❤️
