A monarch in Benin republic explained how the Oyo Empire frequently fought against the Kingdom of Dahomey (in present-day Benin). The Oyo soldiers usually won these battles, and Dahomey eventually agreed to pay tribute to the Alaafin of Oyo. Dahomey continued paying tribute for over 110 years. After more than 110 years, a new king of Dahomey named Ghezo decided to end the tribute. He attacked Oyo soldiers at Kétou, bringing an end to Dahomey’s long standing tributary relationship with the Oyo Empire. He also attacked Imeko in present-day Ogun State. Ghezo later attacked Abeokuta, but the Egba defenders repelled his forces, and he met his Waterloo. he was assassinated by Abeokuta’s soldiers.
