The more weapons a player has in their armoury to ‘outwit’ opponents the more enjoyment they have - a ‘moving screen’ - disguising to receive then letting the ball run ‘going against the flow’ of a marker while moving & screening the ball takes game craft to a new level

A clip of me coaching ‘safe turns’ to Man Utd U18s including Marcus Rashford & Scott McTominay - now I’d set it up differently practicing in the area of the pitch it occurs - in ‘play around rings’ at the back, in midfield or around the box replicating the match scenarios below

Manchester United counter attack goal reminded me of my mentor & ‘Class of 92’ coach Eric Harrison who used to say United teams should attack like the “RED ARROWS” lightening speed, instant support, interchanging runs, precision passing & finishing leaving the opposition in their wake

Running with the ball leaves a vacuum of space that you’ve vacated that can be exploited by a teammate arriving behind you - I remember clearly the Brazilian Junior in 1981 at Wembley running with the ball, back-heeling it to a trailing teammate then sprinting ahead for a pass

The ‘moving screen’ deceiving your marker by using body language to receive but then with ‘small late movements’ letting the ball run against or across your opponents’s flow - at the same time using your body as a barrier between your opponent & the ball creating a moving screen

The best teams use a ‘play around ring’ that doubles up as a ‘security ring’ trapping their opponents in their final third They circulate to find a ‘launch pad’ for a variety of weapons: •The run for the pass •Combinations •Crosses & finishing •Dribbles •Power shots 🧵

Haaland’s goal vs Gabriel reminded me of coaching sessions by Don Howe (ex-Arsenal & England) delivered - ‘Closer to goal the closer you mark, get touch tight - if you look at the ball but can’t feel him then quickly get touch tight again’ - ‘bump him, disrupt his balance’ 🧵

Brazil form a diamond in midfield, the right mf player in the diamond pulls his marker out of a passing lane. The point of the diamond comes short attracting his marker creating a vacuum, the first time set is the trigger for the right mf run blindside of his def into the space🧵

One of the best pieces of advice I’ve ever had was ‘get in the room with top coaches - watch & listen’ I had the privilege of attending numerous coaching demonstrations by Don Howe & in the video below working with Mike Phelan to bring Don’s advice to life in a coaching session
