Gaza was once known as the “Athens of Asia”, a celebrated centre of learning in the Byzantine world. In this deep dive, historian William Dalrymple explains how Gaza developed a renowned school of rhetoric and became a destination for the education of Byzantine elites, much like Oxford or Cambridge today. He highlights how Gaza’s intellectual legacy extended beyond rhetoric and philosophy, including influential biblical scholarship that travelled as far as seventh-century Canterbury. That centuries-old tradition of valuing education has remained a defining feature of Gaza’s society. Despite the immense challenges of decades under Israeli occupation and siege, modern Gaza has maintained one of the highest literacy rates in the region, with adult literacy at around 98%. Across Palestine, education continues to hold a central place in the lives and aspirations of Palestinians. William Dalrymple | Ahmed Alnaouq

“I would not rule out the next president of the United States taking a position which is pro-Palestinian,” British journalist Owen Jones argues, saying that public opinion in the West has shifted dramatically on Palestine-Israel. “That was unthinkable, absolutely unthinkable, a few years ago.” Owen Jones and Karishma Patel join Palestine Deep Dive’s Ahmed Alnaouq and Hala Hanina for a wide-ranging conversation on the rapidly shifting media and political landscape in Britain and the latest developments in occupied Palestine. “We’ve won the argument here in Britain and in the West,” Jones says, speaking on what gives him hope despite the growing repression and attack on solidarity with Palestine. “That’s no consolation to the Palestinian people in the here and now, because that has not translated into the actual public action that we need,” he says, but Patel explains it is a “comfort” knowing there have been ”plenty of people who’ve risen up and done something or made some sort of sacrifice or exhibited some sort of bravery.”

“Call God, habibi. You’re from Gaza. I can do anything I want to you.” Gaza-born author and academic Ahmed Masoud recounts being denied entry through the Allenby Bridge while travelling to the occupied West Bank on his British passport as part of a delegation of international writers attending PalFest. While the rest of the group was permitted to enter, Masoud says he was detained, questioned for hours, and ultimately turned back, despite being the only Palestinian on the delegation.
