Democracy and the rule of law are under attack in #Türkiye. As Dilek Kaya İmamoğlu, wife of imprisoned mayor of Istanbul Ekrem İmamoğlu, said in her address to the #PESCongress25, courts are being used as an instrument by Erdoğan to silence opposition. Those critical of the government – journalists, intellectuals, trade unionists, citizens and mayors from opposition parties – are being persecuted and thrown in jail. We stand with Ekrem, Özgür Özel, CHP 🇹🇷, and the entire democratic opposition: the rule of law must be respected by Mr Erdoğan.

🇷🇸 One year ago, the concrete canopy of the newly renovated train station of Novi Sad, Serbia, collapsed, killing travellers entering and exiting the station. The death toll would rise to 16. Protests, led by students, quickly took to the streets demanding justice, accountability and the end of systemic corruption. Vučić's government imprisoned dozens of students, cracked down on protesters, and refused to listen to their demands. We stand with the demonstrators who have been protesting for one year now. The Serbian people have the right to live in a democratic country where democracy and the rule of law are respected, and officials are held accountable for their actions.

The imprisonment of Istanbul Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu marked a clear attempt to silence the opposition and block a democratic alternative ahead of the presidential election. His arrest sparked massive protests across the country, with hundreds of thousands demanding his release, as well as the freedom of journalists, elected mayors, lawyers and academics imprisoned for standing up to power. The PES stands with Ekrem İmamoğlu, our sister party CHP 🇹🇷, and the Turkish people in their fight for democracy and the rule of law. Authoritarianism has no place in Europe.
