The famous “rape” scene. Actress Tippi Hedren was baffled by Hitchcock’s casting of Sean Connery in “Marnie”(1964). She argued that even the most frigid woman would never scream if a man as attractive as Connery approached her, and insisted she would be unable to do the scene. Hitchcock replied “It’s called acting.” Years before, while filming “Spellbound”, Ingrid Bergman had told Hitch that she was unable to convey the emotion he wanted. She recalled: ‘He said, ‘fake it’, Ingrid’”, adding it was the best advice she had ever been given.

MGM bought the film rights to Irving Berlin’s masterpiece “Annie Get Your Gun” for Judy Garland, but it soon became clear she wasn’t mentally or physically up to the task of playing Annie. Co-star Howard Keel recalled her “shaking with fright.” The studio replaced Judy with the lesser known Betty Hutton. Here, Hutton sings the delightful number, “You Can’t Get A Man With a Gun.”

“You know they’re not real”. “Well, I am.” Cary Grant and Grace Kelly in the firework scene in Hitchcock’s “To Catch A Thief” (1955). The Production Code Administration found the cross-cut symbolism too obvious and asked Hitchcock to remove the fireworks. Hitchcock refused, creating one of the most famous examples of suggestion and subtext outshining explicit action in 1950s cinema.
