Today is the anniversary of the Battle of Isandlwana. Zulu forces overwhelmed and destroyed a British invasion column, inflicting one of the worst defeats ever suffered by the British Army against an indigenous force. Today the Royal Welsh, which is the regiment that evolved from the 24th Regiment of Foot, met with a Zulu Impi on the mountain to exchange pleasantries and mutual respect. This is what makes the world a better place.

At Saunders Beach in Cape Town, a "man" kicked and hurled two small dogs into the freezing sea. When they swam back to safety, he threw them back. When she tried to protect her pets, the man turned aggressive and squared up to her. Onlookers intervened as the situation threatened to explode on a crowded, slippery beach. Witnesses reported the attack twice to police and handed over video evidence identifying the perpetrator. The response? Shrugs. “We’ll check later.” No officers arrived. Not one. If this happens in public, in full view, with proof—what chance does anyone have? Was this perhaps a cultural hatred for dogs?
