Can’t stop watching videos from this Belorussian guy living in his Thai wife’s northern village. Here he is showing her parents’ house: no walls, just a roof, sleeping almost directly on the ground. These aren’t the poorest people, this is what’s it’s like in villages all over Asia and beyond. Imagine how fundamentally secure and safe one must feel to live without walls. He shows how they just go out and pick the largest and most delicious fruit. Fish in the river right next to the house. The survival threshold is so much lower. People seem genuinely relaxed and happy. His 43 year old wife doesn’t have a single frown wrinkle. In Europe we equate poverty with struggle, starvation and (petty) violence. But for the majority of humanity living close to the equator (60% of the world’s population) this isn’t necessarily true. Food just grows around you. That’s a totally different mental plane of existence. I remember swimming on Ko Phi Phi once and some Russian guys swimming nearby were philosophizing out loud: “If you’re homeless in Thailand you can survive on the street, if you’re homeless in Russia you die from the cold.” This basically sums it up. Northern civilization struggle for survival is a whole different ball game, yet we are made to feel bad for poor people in the global south.

My Malaysian friend tricked me into going to an entirely seafood place - not really my thing but Malaysian food is there to change your mind. We had this amazing sweet-sour crab (unlike in Singapore you don’t need to dig through the actual crab) served with delicious slightly sweet buns (I still crave them because they were so addictively good - like a lighter version of a doughnut), a laksa you can compose yourself (any type of seafood you want plus noodle of choice), some greens with scallops, and this crab meat steamed with egg in shell - absolutely divine. The place started out as a live seafood store but evolved into a full scale restaurant. Lovely atmosphere.
