This is the Lydian mode. It appears nowhere in traditional music from the Middle East / Asia / Persia or Africa. It's pretty much exclusively European dating back to Medieval/Church modal theory and classical music. It's a magical sound that features not just in filmscore but across pop, metal and of course classical.
