Mumbai is building one of India’s biggest urban road tunnels beneath Sanjay Gandhi National Park. The Thane–Borivali Twin Tunnel by MMRDA is an approximately 11.8 km corridor, including over 10 km of twin tunnels, connecting the Thane side near Neelkanth Woods with Borivali near Devi Pada. Once completed, the project is expected to reduce the Thane–Borivali journey from around 1–1.5 hours to approximately 15 minutes. By creating a direct east-west road link, it could significantly reduce pressure on Ghodbunder Road and the wider network including JVLR. What makes the project even more interesting is that the tunnels pass beneath Sanjay Gandhi National Park, allowing this major connection to be created while minimising disturbance to the forest and wildlife above. The impact could also extend to real estate. Better connectivity between Thane and Mumbai’s western suburbs can expand employment catchments, improve accessibility and potentially influence development along Ghodbunder Road and western Thane.
