Born in Rome in 1884, Jean Libbera lived his entire life with a rare parasitic twin named Jacques attached to his chest and abdomen. Jacques had a head, arms, and torso — but no independent brain or consciousness. Any movement was controlled by Jean’s own body. In the early 1900s, Jean performed in circuses and sideshows as the “Double-Bodied Man,” drawing huge crowds with the sensationalized story of “two bodies, one soul.” Off stage, he married, had four healthy children, and eventually retired to Italy. He died around 1936 at about age 52. A striking reminder of how rare medical conditions were once turned into entertainment — and how much medicine and society have changed.
