ADC Crisis Deepens as Nwosu Alleges ₦200bn ‘Anti-Coalition Budget,’ Accuses Ex-Deputy Chair of Betrayal The internal crisis rocking the African Democratic Congress (ADC) took a fresh turn on Thursday as former National Chairman of the party, Ralph Nwosu, accused the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu of allegedly deploying a multi-billion-naira “anti-coalition budget” to weaken opposition alliances ahead of future elections. Nwosu made the allegation while addressing journalists on the sidelines of an emergency international press briefing convened in Abuja by the Senator David Mark-led faction of the party following the Independent National Electoral Commission’s (INEC) decision to withdraw recognition from rival leadership blocs within the ADC. The former chairman also expressed disappointment over the role played by former Deputy National Chairman (Government and Legislation), Hon. Bala Nafiu Gombe, describing his actions in the ongoing leadership dispute as a personal betrayal. Speaking candidly, Nwosu said Nafiu had once been among trusted party figures tasked with expanding the ADC’s political reach in Northern Nigeria. According to him, recent developments suggested external influence driven by what he described as a massive political war chest allegedly aimed at dismantling opposition coalitions. “Bala was one of those I personally sent to the North to promote the ADC brand, and he did fairly well. But temptations can come,” Nwosu said. “This government has what they call an anti-coalition budget running into hundreds of billions of naira, and that is what is causing this problem.” He further alleged noticeable changes in Nafiu’s lifestyle, claiming the former party official now moved with heavy convoys and lodged in luxury hotels developments he linked to political inducement, though he provided no documentary evidence to support the claims. Nwosu criticised INEC’s derecognition decision, insisting the electoral body must reverse its position within days to avoid escalating political tensions. “If INEC fails to do the needful, they are creating a big war — not with ADC, but with Nigerians,” he warned. The former chairman maintained that the party’s leadership structure remained intact despite the commission’s stance and directed members nationwide to continue political activities, including congresses, registrations and preparations for a national convention. Reaffirming the faction’s resolve, Nwosu declared that party programmes would proceed regardless of INEC’s recognition status. “INEC come or don’t come, we will continue our processes,” he said, adding that the ADC remained determined to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) politically. He also renewed calls for the removal of the INEC chairman, accusing the commission of undermining democratic competition.
