Bog word of the day is ombrotrophic. Ombros (Greek)= rain shower; Trophic from trophikós= nutrition. Bogs (unlike other wetlands like fens) are ombrotrophic & receive all water & nutrient inputs from precipitation. This fosters unique chemistry & species like meat eating plants.

Climate change is leading to bigger and more severe fires. In the north, peatlands and permafrost (the biosphere’s carbon powerhouses) are becoming more vulnerable to burning. Claims that climate change is not a factor (it’s arson! it’s fuels!) are misguided and misleading.

I love bogs because they -are weird and unstable -were considered portals to the gods -are beautiful in an eerie way -are storytellers -are powerful enough to control Earth’s climate -are vulnerable and need protection. Save bogs to save ourselves.
