Bog word of the day is ombrotrophic. Ombros (Greek)= rain shower; Trophic from trophikós= nutrition. Bogs (unlike other wetlands like fens) are ombrotrophic & receive all water & nutrient inputs from precipitation. This fosters unique chemistry & species like meat eating plants.

Today I am imagining a future where we normalize and value pocket-sized wetlands everywhere. A win for biodiversity, carbon storage, water management and likely our wellness overall.

Visual demonstration of a climate feedback. Methane bubbling up through flooded soils in an area impacted by permafrost thaw. Warming leads to thaw, triggering hotspots of carbon emissions, repeat cycle. Video credit: @ArcticWebb Will Cox
