President of Somalia Hassan Sheikh Mohamud referred to Kenya's Northeastern, Ethiopia's Ogaden Region and Somaliland as "three missing" parts of the Somalia Union. HSM made the Pan Somali irredentist comment on eve of 26 June anniversary marking the Somalia union. Video clip posted here in the interest of history, foreign policy clarity. Somali Irredentism is alive and well - apparently.

This story will go on and on and on. A Somaliland schoolgirl in Hargeisa, speaking in perfect Arabic, defends fellow students captured on viral video wanting to know more about Israel as a country and its history. "Where was the world when they were killing our mothers and fathers, destroying our homes..." she says.

#PRIORITY Row in Munyonyo - How HSM Threw Tantrums at Kampala Summit Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud openly clashed with his Ugandan hosts yesterday at the closure of the summit of African troop and police contributing states (TPCCs) at Munyonyo. HSM was incensed by a few innocuous phrases in the final communique that underscored desirability of "inclusive political dialogue" in Somalia. The Somali leader demanded the passage expunged arguing that Somalia's politics was its own domestic affair and beyond the remit of the African TPCCs and that AUSSOM should confine itself to security matters. The tantrum worked. The passage was rewritten and 'offending' political messaging removed. So what have we learnt? 1. HSM knows how to get what he wants by sheer blackmail. Throw a few tantrums and the weak-kneed African neighbours will back down. He was right. That's what they did. 2. Delinking Somali politics from security is a sheer absurdity and everyone knows it. Clausewitz's dictum on military campaigns as quintessentially designed to serve a political end and purpose is lost on HSM but should it be lost too to AUSSOM and Ugandan generals? AUSSOM's role is not robotic kinetic action against jihadists but creating the political space for Somalis to reconcile, unite, construct a viable state and healthy progressive politics. Endemic political dysfunction, state contraction and fragmentation raises fundamental question about what end AUSSOM serves. 3. "Somalia is a sovereign state and must be left to determine its own course" is a popular phrase loved by Somali hypernationalists but highly dubious in Somalia's current context. Somalia is still a fragile state, unable to exercise full functional sovereignty. That is why African troops are battling Al-Shabaab - to secure Somalia's sovereignty. To insinuate or suggest that African states who sent troops, lost blood and treasure to liberate Somalia are encroaching on Somalia's sovereignty by simply demanding inclusive political dialogue, is probably the height of ingratitude. Real sovereignty as I have always said is earned not demanded. True sovereignty is not shouted at conferences; it is painstakingly negotiated and flourishes through consent and national consensus. 4. If East Africa cannot call Somalia to order; cannot offer honest opinion and advice; cannot correct its wayward leadership - of what use then is the military campaign? We might as well end the mission and leave Somalia to its own 'sovereign' devices... (Here is the full clip of the altercation between HSM and his Ugandan host)

A young female leader from Northeastern shines with her oratory, empathetic politics and sincere attempt to bring peace, end Somali-Kamba feud in Garissa/Kitui counties. Respect to Ummul Kheir Harun for a delightful speech. I have always known women to be better at mediating and bringing peace between warring communities. Good to see Ms Harun follow the footsteps of Deeqa, the late activist from Wajir who helped end inter-communal wars.

Kenya-Somalia Update: Outgoing Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud arrived today for what Villa Somalia described as 'a one-day working visit.' He was received by Kenyan President William Samoei Ruto, PhD. It cannot be a formal diplomatic 'working visit'. In Kenya, Sunday is a prayer day and President is usually out somewhere in a church. Nonetheless, Mr Ruto welcomed HSM warmly in Kilgoris, Narok County, southwestern Kenya today. HSM actually got a nice treat - he was driven around one of Kenya's most beautiful and lush countryside in safari-style Landcruiser (Ethiopian PM Abiy Ahmed does this frequently when meeting a dear foreign friend). Kenya and Somalia relations erratic and prone to periodic tensions. But today's reception is signal Kenya wants continuity and prefers dealing with HSM as full head of state. HSM must have come for a specific reason. And we won't know for sure what that reason is. Earlier, he did try to come to the Ocean Conference in Mombasa, but somehow did not get invited. Interesting the host of the conference Mining Minister Joho was the one who received HSM at the airport. HSM is keen on Kenya and wants Kenyan 'validation.' He needed the optics of continuity as head of state and validation by a regional power. And that he seems to have got. Clever man.
